Trump-McConnell praised for 200th judicial confirmation

June 24, 2020, Fairfax, Va.—Americans for Limited Government President Rick Manning today issued the following statement praising President Donald Trump and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) for getting the 200th judge confirmed since Jan. 2017:

“President Trump has appointed and had confirmed 200 federal judges. To put this into perspective, there are only 870 federal judges on the bench, meaning the President has already impacted almost 23 percent of the federal judiciary.

“Why does this matter? You only have to look at today’s ruling from the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals to put a writ of mandamus on the Judge Emmet Sullivan who was seeking to continue the prosecution of Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn. The opinion overturning Judge Sullivan and demanding he allow the Justice Department to dismiss the charges against Flynn was written by Trump appointee Naomi Rao. Rao’s clear concise opinion that upholds the rule of law and the Constitution is a refreshing change from the out of control federal judiciary that we’ve become all too accustomed to. If you don’t think judges matter, ask Lt. Gen. Flynn. To him, they made all the difference in the world.

“Due to President Trump’s aggressive approach to finding and appointing constitutionally solid jurists, it is fair to say the federal judiciary has been changed for a generation. President Trump and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell have done a great job of tag-teaming judicial nominations and deserve the thanks of those of us who believe in constitutional limited governance.”

President Trump’s visa executive order puts American workers first

June 22, 2020, Fairfax, Va.—Americans for Limited Government President Rick Manning today issued the following statement praising President Donald Trump’s executive order to cut legal immigration into the U.S.:

“President Trump is putting Americans first with his memorandum cutting the number of legal immigrants into the country.  At a time when more than 20 million Americans are on the unemployment rolls, it is important to insure that opportunities generated by the U.S. economy go to those who have lost their jobs due to the Chinese-originated COVID-19 virus response.

“America is a very generous nation, and the President’s executive order will ensure that those who have high-end unique skill sets will still be able to contribute to our nation’s growth over the next six months. But this executive order should put an end to the days of companies like Disney replacing their American workers in their IT shops with cheaper, temporary foreign workers.  When Donald Trump ran for President, he campaigned against this abhorrent practice of forcing U.S. workers to train their foreign replacements with the threat of losing their pensions and unemployment benefits hanging over their heads.

“As our’s and the world’s economy resets, this is the perfect opportunity to reconfigure visa allocations to best reflect our nation’s needs, and President Trump’s actions today are projected to open up as many as 500,000 jobs for hard working, willing Americans.  The President campaigned as an America first president, and today’s announcement is just one more proof point that he is governing as an America first President.”

Bolton book lies are the ultimate betrayal

June 18, 2020, Fairfax, Va.—Americans for Limited Government President Rick Manning today issued the following statement blasting former National Security Advisor John Bolton’s claim that President Trump asked Chinese President Xi Zinping to help out with the election during trade talks in Osaka:

“The release of excerpts from a book by fired National Security Advisor John Bolton reveals much more about Bolton than President Donald Trump.  As is always the case when money is to be made, Bolton makes claims about the President designed to titillate the ‘Orange Man Bad’ crowd.  One of the most scurrilous of the claims relates to an alleged conversation that the President had with Chinese President Xi asking for help with the election, which both U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer and former White House Chief of Staff Mick Mulvaney say never occurred.

“Lighthizer who was in the room for the meeting Bolton sites told the Senate Finance Committee that the allegation is, ‘Absolutely untrue, never happened. I was there, I have no recollection of that ever happening. I don’t believe it’s true, I don’t believe it ever happened,’ Lighthizer testified during a Senate Finance Committee hearing, concluding that Bolton’s allegation was ‘completely crazy.’

“America is at a crossroads.  China is engaged in a wholesale assault on our nation from attacking the dollar as the world reserve currency to infiltrating our nation’s university and laboratory system to stealing our intellectual property and coercing U.S. multinational corporations to become their political and legislative advocates, and it is an indictment on John Bolton’s character that in an environment where Marxists are burning our cities that he is seeking to destroy the only person standing in China’s way.  The fact that Bolton’s massive ego was hurt when the President fired him and the former National Security Advisor has been offered a small fortune for a book is no reason for him to effectively provide aid and comfort to the enemy out of spite.

“It is a shame that someone with a distinguished career like John Bolton would be so wrapped up in his own ego and shame over being fired that he would gaslight the President with clear lies. Sadly, the Bolton book writes the epitaph on his political tomb as, ‘turned his back on his country when America needed him most.’”

Justice Clarence Thomas is right, the Second Amendment to keep and bear arms is a fundamental right and needs to be protected

June 16, 2020, Fairfax, Va.—Americans for Limited Government President Rick Manning today issued the following statement praising Justice Clarence Thomas for criticizing the Supreme Court for not taking any cases to defend the Second Amendment:

“Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas is correct in expressing his concern that the Supreme Court of the United States is treating the Second Amendment individual right to keep and bear arms as a redheaded step-child of the Bill of Rights. Americans from all walks of life have observed and in some cases experienced in real-time the pressing need to be able to own and carry firearms in the past few weeks, yet the Supreme Court continues to allow its two established precedents in the Heller and MacDonald decisions to effectively be trampled by lower courts and states which thumb their noses at both the Supreme Court and the United States Constitution through egregious violations of the rights of law-abiding citizens.

“It is the Supreme Court’s job to protect citizen’s rights, yet while the Court has proven itself willing to rewrite statutes related to workplace discrimination based upon sex that Congress has expressly refused to change, they, once again are unwilling to protect the rights of Americans that are plainly written into the Bill of Rights and which they have previously affirmed.  One of the great frustrations many Americans have with the federal courts including the Supreme Court, is that left-wing jurists go to any length in attempts to thwart the will of the people when it comes to immigration and other important security topics, but when it comes to the Second Amendment, a presumably textual driven Supreme Court is flaccid while the left abuses the rights of citizens.

“The failure of the Supreme Court to take up and address fundamental freedom issues combined with previous contortions to uphold Obamacare and other Constitutionally dubious government overreaches brings into question whether fighting massive political wars over who sits on the federal bench is worth the time, energy and effort.”

Systemic racism rejected in Meese-led letter to Congress

June 15, 2020, Washington, D.C.—Former Attorney General Ed Meese led more than 100 signers in a letter to President Donald Trump and Congress titled “Mainstream Americans Know…Before We Can Have Healing, We Must Have Law and Order.”

The letter, which was also signed by many black leaders, begins by asserting: “America is founded on the rule of law. Without law, there can be no justice, and there can be no peace or prosperity. The rule of law exists not to control the people, but to empower them; not to impose the will of the State on the people, but to guarantee to all law-abiding citizens an orderly and peaceful framework in which they can exercise their rights. Every day, hundreds of thousands of law enforcement officers across the country selflessly place their own lives at risk to uphold the rule of law, better their communities, and protect the most vulnerable. Their brave sacrifice builds safer and more secure communities, and they deserve our respect.

“No profession is perfect, and people in every profession will always be flawed…

“In this time of turmoil, it is particularly important that voices are raised who stand against the planned anarchy on the streets of our nation. Anarchy which is doing lasting harm to the very communities that they portend to support.”

The following signatories of the letter are available for interviews:

Sheriff David Clarke:  Sheriffclarke.events@gmail.com – 202 969-8555

Col. Allen West: Contact Luke Twombly at ltwombly93@gmail.com or 650-575-5375

Tim Daughtry, author: Timothy.Daughtry@yahoo.com or 336-707-8833

Tabitha Walter, Eagle Forum: tabitha@eagleforum.org or 202-341-5737

The letter clearly rejects the notion of systemic racism stating, “We all agree that we can continue to better our police departments, along with every area of our government, but we reject the radical notion that law enforcement, or this great nation, is inherently and systemically racist or beyond repair. We reject the radical notion that defunding police departments will increase public safety. But we support the notion of individual responsibility and freedom. We support those who insist that individuals who betray the public trust be held accountable.”

Tremendously wise for Trump, McConnell to delay phase four legislation amid improving jobs picture

June 15, 2020, Fairfax, Va.—Americans for Limited Government President Rick Manning today issued the following statement praising Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) and President Donald Trump for delaying phase four legislation amid improving jobs numbers from May:

“President Trump and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell are demonstrating tremendous wisdom in delaying consideration of an additional stimulus package until the employment situation becomes more clear in July.  With the economy opening up in most states in the beginning of June, it would be irresponsible to proceed as Speaker Pelosi has done, by moving forward with trillions of more dollars in spending without a clear plan on where any new money should be spent to bolster American jobs.

“The May jobs report showing the growth of 3 million private sector jobs was a window into the very beginning of the economic rebound from the effects of the China-originated virus response. The weekly unemployment insurance report shows that the growth of the number of people on unemployment has topped out, with the seasonally adjusted number of  unemployed at just under 21 million people with it diminishing every week by a quarter to half million people.  Letting the economy work for another month before deciding to create trillions of dollars of more debt that America cannot afford will allow legislators and the White House to more intelligently weigh the benefits of various stimulus choices versus the devastating impact of continuing to increase borrowing into a market that is already saturated.

“A national debate on the advantages of additional stimulus versus the negative impacts of our already too big national debt on private risk investments needs to be had, and if the June employment data shows that Americans are going back to work without additional federal government intervention the need to add on to our borrowing may be mitigated.  It is a credit to both the White House and the GOP Senate that they are resisting the siren song of more election year spending right now in order to more accurately gauge what the our economy needs to restore itself.”

No more delays, time to confirm Furchtgott-Roth at Transportation

June 12, 2020, Fairfax, Va.—Americans for Limited Government President Rick Manning today issued the following statement urging the Senate to confirm the long-delayed nomination of Diana Furchtgott-Roth to be the next Assistant Secretary of Transportation for Research and Technology:

“It is beyond absurd that a Presidential appointee should have to wait almost three years to be confirmed or not by the U.S. Senate. Yet that is the case with the brilliant economist Diana Furchtgott-Roth as she waits for the Senate to act on her nomination to become the Assistant Secretary for Research and Development at the U.S. Department of Transportation. Make no mistake that this position is critical as decisions are regularly made about the shape of our nation’s transportation future in the rapidly approaching 5G world, and somehow the Senate has failed to move forward with her nomination.

“Ms. Furchtgott-Roth served under Presidents Ronald Reagan, George Herbert Walker Bush and George W. Bush in important roles, and currently serves at the Deputy Assistant Secretary for Research and Technology.  She is a respected thinker in conservative circles having recently served as a senior fellow and director of Economics21 at the Manhattan Institute. In the George W. Bush administration, she has been the Chief Economist for the Department of Labor under then Secretary Elaine L. Chao, who heads the Transportation Department under President Trump.  On a personal note, while my stint at the Labor Department came after Ms. Furchtgott-Roth had left, I did get the opportunity to serve with her on the Trump transition team, and she is one of this nation’s truly bright lights.

“Being nominated to an Assistant Secretary position is an honor, but when the confirmation process becomes a three year, never ending ordeal, even the most ardent publicly minded servant like Furchgott-Roth have to begin to lose patience.  It is time for the Senate to confirm Diana Furchgott-Roth and let her assume the full responsibilities in advising Secretary Chao on the infrastructure issues that will dominate the next twenty years.  In fact failure to confirm this superbly qualified woman would be a dereliction of the duties of the Senate.”

President Trump and the nation need Russ Vought at OMB

June 11, 2020, Fairfax, Va.—Americans for Limited Government President Rick Manning today issued the following statement urging the Senate to confirm the nomination of Russ Vought to head the Office of Management and Budget:

“With a projected budget deficit of $3.7 trillion for 2020, Russ Vought is the right person to be heading up the Office of Management and Budget.  Russ’ focus on fiscal sanity and ensuring that all the extra hundreds of billions of dollars now being devoted to the pandemic response, including payroll protection, are being properly allocated is essential to protecting taxpayers’ interests.

“In addition to his commitment to protecting the Treasury from profligate spending, Russ Vought has played a crucial role in analyzing regulatory relief measures to ensure that they met the President’s and our nation’s needs. With President Trump seeking to further streamline government to ensure that our economy is jump started and recovers rapidly from the economic COVID catastrophe, our nation cannot afford to train someone in this crucial position. It is clear that at this time in history, America needs Russ Vought’s expertise and priorities in the lead at the OMB.

“Americans for Limited Government urges a yes vote on Russ Vought’s nomination for Director of the Office of Management and Budget.”

Defunding police is the wrong answer, look at collective bargaining agreements

June 8, 2020, Fairfax, Va.—Americans for Limited Government President Rick Manning today issued the following statement in response to calls to defund police departments nationwide:

“Everyone agrees that police brutality is wrong.  It is in fact every bit as much of an assault on the rule of law as attacking our public institutions with Molotov Cocktails. But those screaming for police accountability are missing the real problem. It is that bad cops are shielded by public employee unions like they were bureaucrats caught stealing paper clips.

“To get police accountability, you need to break the stranglehold that police unions and the public employee contracts they negotiate have over local governments. With all the focus on the death of George Floyd, most people have no idea that the reason it took the Minneapolis City government two days to react was because the union contract stipulates a two-day cooling off period before anything can be done about a police related death.

“In that two days, many thought that they had to take to the streets to bring attention to the case, when in fact, the video had been around the world three times before the first protester hit the streets. If the Mayor of Minneapolis and the Governor of Minnesota had reacted immediately, explaining that the union contract requires time for the dust to settle in order for actions to be taken, it might have taken some of the oxygen out of the violent protests.

“What’s more, Americans would be demanding that their local governments review their local contracts to ensure that bad cops weren’t protected by bad public employee union contracts.  If you want police accountability, that is what needs to happen, we need the unions to quit protecting the few bad apples whose actions are causing cities like Minneapolis to consider the insane act of defunding their entire police departments.”

D.C. proves itself unworthy of home rule after evicting Utah National Guard

June 5, 2020, Fairfax, Va.—Americans for Limited Government President Rick Manning today issued the following statement urging Congress to end D.C. home rule:

“The news that Washington, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser forced the eviction of Utah National Guard personnel who flew in to defend the city from rioters today is beyond belief.  These young men and women came to our nation’s capital to protect our federal government resources from Antifa bands determined to wreak destruction.  In her action, Muriel Bowser proved that not only is she unsuited to be Mayor of the federal city, but the entire concept of DC home rule is reckless and no longer relevant.

“Washington, D.C. is a federal district.  The federal government has primacy over its control and in national security issues has absolute supremacy over the District.  While D.C. often complains about not being treated as a state, they consistently prove that they are not even a good city.  It is time for Congress to reconsider D.C.’s home rule, because if the local government actively obstructs the defense of the District, then they have lost their right to govern.”
