218 House members discharge Export-Import Bank reauthorization

Oct. 9, 2015, Fairfax, Va.–Americans for Limited Government President Rick Manning today issued the following statement blasting 218 members of the House of Representatives who discharged reauthorization of the Export-Import Bank of the United States:

“Without any new loans from the Export-Import Bank, U.S. exporters managed to sell $188.8 billion of goods and services in July, and $185 billion in August. The reason almost nobody noticed the Ex-Im Bank’s expiration on June 30 is simple. It only accounts for 1 percent of the nation’s $2.344 trillion of annual exports. In other words, its expiration hardly matters at all when companies can just secure financing elsewhere in a global marketplace.

“Yet 218 members of the House, including more than 40 House Republicans, have seen fit to give yet another bailout to companies like Boeing and General Electric, all so their customers can get guaranteed loans at a slightly lower interest rate. This blatant corporatism on display is just one more reason why the American people want to throw House leaders out on their ears.

“This proves once again that the true majority of the House are Democrats and handful of Republicans. There isn’t a major piece of legislation that has not depended on Democrats to pass, and this is no more apparent than in this extension of the very corporate cronyism that has thoroughly corrupted Washington, D.C.

“Perhaps, the rest of the House Republican Conference will finally wake up and discover that their problem isn’t those who are pushing them to stand up for conservative principles, but instead it is the handful of their Republican colleagues who regularly vote with the Democrats creating a center-left majority that feeds the corporate state.”

McCarthy Speaker race exit opens up opportunity to restore separation of powers

Oct. 8, 2015, Fairfax, Va.—Americans for Limited Government President Rick Manning today issued the following statement in response to House Majority Leader Rep. Kevin McCarthy’s decision to drop out of the running for Speaker of the House of Representatives:

“The shocking decision by Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy to leave the race for Speaker opens up the process to a full and complete discussion of the proper role of the House of Representatives. Whoever steps into the running and ultimately becomes the new Speaker must move to restore the separation of powers between the branches of government. An effective Speaker will unite House Republicans through a revival of the House’s constitutional prerogatives, including the Article I  power of the purse, to stop President Obama’s regulatory onslaught against the U.S. economy and freedom.”

Pacific trade deal worsens Obama’s globalization lament

Oct. 7, 2015, Fairfax, Va.—Americans for Limited Government President Rick Manning today issued the following statement in response to President Barack Obama calling globalization a challenge at the White House Summit on Worker Voice:

“President Obama calling globalization a challenge just three days after releasing an executive summary of the Trans-Pacific Partnership is jaw dropping in its audacity. Once again, the President proves that he cannot see the destructive impact of the very policies that he promotes. We invite Obama to join Americans for Limited Government in opposing his own Trans-Pacific Partnership because of its devastating impact on the U.S. economy and worker. If Obama wants to stop jobs  from going overseas, then perhaps he should stop shipping them there.”

Pacific trade deal executive summary fails to address key governance concerns

Oct. 5, 2015, Fairfax, Va.–Americans for Limited Government President Rick Manning today issued the following statement in response to the executive summary of the Trans-Pacific Partnership released by the U.S. Trade Representative:

“The release of the Trans-Pacific Partnership summary is interesting propaganda, but the key issues of governance and enforcement mechanisms under the deal remain shrouded in mystery pending release of the full agreement.

“Additionally, the deal’s failure to address to basic currency manipulation concerns makes it a non-starter as it puts the U.S. heavy manufacturing sector at a competitive disadvantage that will never be rectified. It is foolish for anyone embrace this agreement without full public disclosure of all its provisions.

“Of course, that didn’t stop Congress when fast tracking the deal was being decided. Let’s hope that Congress keeps its powder dry until the Pacific trade deal receives a full and thorough public vetting.”

Congress saves the Internet — again

Oct. 2, 2015, Fairfax, Va.—Americans for Limited Government President Rick Manning today issued the following statement in response to Congress continuing to defund the transition by the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) of the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) functions to the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN):

“Congress took decisive action by again defunding the giveaway of U.S. oversight of the Internet domain name system in the continuing resolution. This is important because although the contract has been extended for up to a year, federal rules permit NTIA to unilaterally change the contract with ICANN without notifying Congress. Thanks to the defund, the Internet giveaway will be impossible for the next two months.

“This critical step will protect the First Amendment freedoms of speech and the press on the Internet from international meddling and potential censorship. We thank House and Senate leaders for recognizing the importance of this issue.

“This is a prime example of how Congress can utilize the power of the purse to reassert its Article One constitutional prerogatives, and maintain Congress’ primacy in setting fiscal policy. We encourage Congress to embrace a comprehensive defunding strategy to stop Obama’s regulatory onslaught.”

Is Teamster-Trump dalliance beginning of end for Dem coalition?

Oct. 1, 2015, Fairfax, Va.—Americans for Limited Government President Rick Manning today issued the following statement in response to the Teamsters union decision to meet with Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump before deciding who to endorse:

“Big Labor should think twice about Big Green advocates like Hillary Clinton. Hillary Clinton’s announced opposition to the Keystone XL Pipeline sends direct shot across the bow to every private sector labor union. It is clear that their interests are no longer served by a Democratic party that has fully embraced the Big Green anti-job agenda.

“The first step in this Big Labor v. Democrat divorce has been taken by the Teamsters, who are weighing their options for a presidential endorsement. This is clearly out of recognition of not only Republican support forthe pipeline that the Teamsters have supported but also GOP candidates Bobby Jindal, Donald Trump, Carly Fiorina, Mike Huckabee and others who came out strongly against fast track trade legislation while the Obama Administration twisted arms to get it.

“The combination of Democrats’ radical environmental anti-jobs agenda and some Republicans’ support for the union position on fast track clearly is forcing Big Labor to reconsider their historical bedfellows. It is this shifting dynamic that may cause national Democrats to pay a real political price for their economically destructive policies.”

Jeb Bush and Ted Cruz agree, don’t give away the Internet

Sept. 28, 2015, Fairfax, Va.—Americans for Limited Government President Rick Manning today issued the following statement in response to a growing consensus among Republican presidential candidates, including Jeb Bush and Ted Cruz, against transitioning Department of Commerce oversight of the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) functions by the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) to the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN):

“When candidates as far apart on the conservative spectrum like Ted Cruz and Jeb Bush agree that U.S. oversight of the world’s Internet domain name system should be safeguarded, Congress needs to pay attention. The First Amendment freedoms of every person who uses the Internet is at stake once the U.S. government contract with ICANN expires. Although NTIA has extended that contract for up to a year, the agency is not legally bound to keep that timetable — that is unless Congress says so by defunding the transition for the entirety of Fiscal Year 2016.

“The concerns of presidential candidates become all the more important as key congressional leaders openly question the constitutionality of the transition without an affirmative Article IV vote of Congress to transfer government property.

“The only rational course is to extend the Internet giveaway defund for at least another year, because the protection of every American’s free speech rights on the Internet is simply too important.”

Boehner retirement presents golden budget opportunity

Sept. 25, 2015, Fairfax, Va.—Americans for Limited Government President Rick Manning today issued the following statement in response to the pending retirement of House Speaker Rep. John Boehner (R-Ohio):

“Speaker Boehner has led the House through some tumultuous times. While we have not always agreed with his tactics, we all shared a common desire to restore fiscal sanity in Washington, D.C. and his legacy will be the three-year leveling of outlays that have slowed the growth of the national debt.

“The transition provides a unique opportunity to reestablish the separation of powers between the branches of government. Rep. Ken Buck has been at the forefront of the push to the defend the House’s Article I power of the purse, a vision shared by all House Republicans led by Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy.

“The budget discussions ahead provide the perfect opportunity for House Republicans to set the spending priorities for 12 of the remaining 15 months of the Obama Administration. The shift in power provides a golden opportunity for Congress to put its imprimatur on policies that stop Obama’s executive branch regulatory overreach.”

Without Senate action, Iran deal is a done deal

Sept. 17, 2015, Fairfax, Va.–Americans for Limited Government President Rick Manning today issued the following statement blasting Senate inaction to consider the Iran nuclear deal as a treaty under Article II of the Constitution:

“President Obama’s Iran deal is scheduled to go into effect today in spite of his failure to follow the terms of Corker-Cardin, which required full submission of the agreement to Congress, including any side deals. However, more concerning is that the government has unilaterally amended Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty obligations, violating the treaty clause of the U.S. Constitution since no treaty can be amended by statute or without full ratification of the Senate.

“The responsibility and duty of the Senate is to bring up Obama’s Iran nuclear deal as a treaty immediately and defeat it. By forcing Obama’s treaty into the normal ratification process, the Senate will set up a court fight over whether the President can unilaterally change a treaty. While such a court fight may not stop certain aspects of the deal from going forward, it can have the effect of stopping the transfer of billions of dollars to an Islamofascist Iranian regime. And that is a fight worth having.”
