Trump right to veto resolution attempting to stop him from building the wall

March 15, 2019, Fairfax, Va.—Americans for Limited Government President Rick Manning today issued the following statement in support of President Donald Trump vetoing a resolution overturning his national emergency declaration on the southern border:

“President Trump did the right thing by vetoing the resolution that sought to stop him from building the wall. It is unconscionable for anyone to think that the President does not have a constitutional and legal right to declare an emergency on an issue that directly impacts America’s sovereignty and national security as the integrity of its borders. We urge Americans to contact their Congressmen and Senators and tell them to sustain the President’s veto in order to address this emergency and humanitarian crisis. Americans for Limited Government has launched SustainTheVeto.org to make it easy for folks to contact their representatives.”

ALG urges President Trump to veto Congress resolution overturning national emergency on border, launches SustaintheVeto.org

March 14, 2019, Fairfax, Va.—Americans for Limited Government President Rick Manning today issued the following statement urging President Donald Trump to veto a resolution disapproving of his national emergency declaration on the southern border, and for Congressional Republicans to sustain the veto by launching http://sustaintheveto.org :

“President Trump is well within his constitutional authority vested in him to veto a resolution by Congress overturning his national emergency declaration on the southern border, and that is absolutely what he should do. Congress has failed to adequately secure the border, leaving President Trump with little option but to use Congress’ limited grant of authority to reprogram uncommitted military construction funds to build the wall and other fencing needed to keep drugs, gangs and human trafficking at bay. It is then up to Republicans in Congress, enough of them, to vote to sustain President’s veto, doing everything in their power to help President Trump secure the border and address the national emergency and humanitarian crisis there.”

Emergency declaration opposition is ‘disingenuous’

March 14, 2019, Fairfax, Va.—Americans for Limited Government President Rick Manning today issued the following statement urging the Senate to reject a resolution disapproving of President Donald Trump’s national emergency declaration on the southern border:

“Congress has never voted to overturn a national emergency in 43 years with more than 50 emergencies, even when the ‘national’ emergencies were problems overseas. Only now is it acting in an instance where the problems are here in the U.S. It does not care about the discretion it granted to the President or it would have acted to rescind these authorities long ago. And it is true this wouldn’t be necessary if Congress would do its job and secure the border. Having a Congress that refuses to defend this country is an emergency, and President Trump has done the right thing within the limited powers that Congress has granted, to secure the border.

“Congress has every power to delegate limited fiscal reprogramming authority to the President, in this case to utilize uncommitted military construction funds to address the national emergency and humanitarian crisis on the southern border with drugs, gangs and human trafficking continuing to press on the southern border. Yet, members of the U.S. Senate are acting like Congress never passed such a law. If the question is hypothetically, absent Congressional authorization, can the President just spend however much money he wants, of course, the answer is no, under the Constitution it is Congress that must first act.

“Well, it has. Congress passed the National Emergencies Act and it is perfectly constitutional, and is no different than Congress’ authority to appropriate huge sums of money for broad purposes, leaving it to departments and agencies to determine how best to meet those goals via the contracting process. It is no different than the limited transfer authority Congress grants agencies every fiscal year. To pretend that this bit of discretion is different from all the other discretions it has granted is disingenuous at best.”

Trump budget a step toward sanity, cuts $2.7 trillion over 10 years, saves $236 billion in interest

March 11, 2019, Fairfax, Va.—Americans for Limited Government President Rick Manning today issued the following statement on the President’s proposed budget for 2020:

“President Trump’s budget creates a framework for a return to fiscal responsibility with $2.7 trillion of spending reductions off the baseline over 10 years, including saving $236 billion in interest payments, and Congress should use it as guide to ending our bi-partisan plunge toward national financial disaster.

“The first step toward fiscal sanity is for Congress to fund the government based upon the current spending caps, and reforming mandatory spending programs, rather than continuing to spend beyond the previously agreed to means. The President’s budget follows this prescription, and gets the budget towards balance. It’s up to Congress

“The truth is that the national debt is set to skyrocket if Congress fails to act. The debt and the ever increasing costs of interest payments on that debt are the greatest threat this country faces over the long term.”

Unemployment remains low as economy continues to grow

March 8, 2019, Fairfax, Va.—Americans for Limited Government President Rick Manning today issued the following statement on the latest jobs numbers:

“The March jobs report will be one of the most watched since President Trump took office.  These reports are simply snap shots in time so individual reports can have ups and downs, and next month’s report will tell us if the good news of continued strong employment as shown in the unemployment rate drop to 3.8 percent in the household survey is accurate, or if the very meager job creation number from the establishment survey is of concern.

“The fact that reports on employer and consumer sentiments toward the economy remain strongly positive plus the household survey showing 255,000 more people saying they have jobs leads me to believe that the jobs number is an anomaly as the three month average of that survey remains a robust 180,000 jobs per month. As the impact of the prior Congress’ tax cut bill continues to kick in through business investment, and the negative effects of anticipated rising interest rates no longer are a factor, it is reasonable to assume that the economy will continue growing. However, one possible headwind is the dearth of labor available to hire demonstrated by the reported 7 million plus more jobs than workers available to fill them.

“The first two years of the Trump administration has been focused upon bringing sidelined workers at about 9 million when he took office back into the workforce, and they have been successful dropping the number by more than 2 million.  However, if job creators cannot find people to fill those jobs, they will automate or find other ways to grow or put expansion plans on hold.  Since Congress is not going to enact a rational immigration policy to meet our economy’s needs, and they will also not reduce benefits to those who choose not to work, the job creation number may become less of an economic indicator than in the past as alternative means to get work done productively will be the obvious alternative to the labor shortages they face.”

House Dems condemned for failure to condemn anti-Semitism

March 6, 2019, Fairfax, Va.—Americans for Limited Government President Rick Manning today issued the following statement blasting the House of Representatives for not yet scheduling a vote on a resolution condemning anti-Semitism:

“It is shameful that House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer has not scheduled a vote in the House of Representatives rebuking the on-going anti-Semitism demonstrated by Democrat Representative Ilhan Omar.  It is even more astounding that Omar continues to hold her seat on the House Foreign Affairs Committee.  Both political parties used to be committed to the idea of ‘never again’ when it comes to anti-Jewish hate, but apparently the House Democrats, led by Hoyer, fail to realize that never means never.”

Trump needs to veto resolution blocking emergency declaration at the border

March 5, 2019, Fairfax, Va.—Americans for Limited Government President Rick Manning today issued the following statement urging President Donald Trump to veto a resolution blocking his emergency declaration on the southern border:

“The Senate vote on a resolution blocking President Trump’s emergency declaration on the border is little more than a show vote. President Trump should immediately veto the legislation knowing that it will be sustained in both houses. The President has absolute constitutional authority to protect our nation’s borders, and if that’s not enough Congress has delegated additional limited authority to the executive branch that clearly supports his emergency order. If Congress wants to rescind powers that it gave decades ago they should pass separate legislation doing that. It is time for both the Republicans and the Democrats in Congress to come to grips with the fact that Donald Trump is President and stop trying to create a different set of rules for the Trump presidency than have been applied to any other chief executive prior to his tenure.”

House Democrat ‘subpoenapalooza’ distracts from Green New Deal, infanticide and FISAgate

March 5, 2019, Fairfax, Va.—Americans for Limited Government President Rick Manning today issued the following statement in response to the 81 letters sent to witnesses from the House Judiciary Committee demanding testimony in its investigation of President Donald Trump:

“House Democrats’ subpoenapalooza demonstrates how desperate they are to avoid talking about the Green New Deal that destroys every semblance of individual liberty, the murdering of newly born children and the crimes of FISAgate. Besides they have to provide a reason for billionaire Tom Steyer to keep pumping millions of dollars into their reelection campaigns.”

ALG, energy and limited government groups urge Federal Energy Regulatory Commission to engage in Public Utilities Regulatory Policy Act reform

March 4, 2019, Fairfax, Va.—Americans for Limited Government was joined by nine major energy and limited government leaders in urging the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) to “engage in comprehensive (Public Utilities Regulatory Policy Act) PURPA reform” in a jointly signed letter released today.

The letter explains that “In the wake of a national energy crisis, PURPA was signed into law in 1978 to encourage, among other things, more renewable energy, at ‘equitable retail rates for electric consumers.’ But over four decades since PURPA’s passage, the nation’s energy landscape has changed profoundly, including the development of regional, wholesale, competitive electricity markets, and the fact that the U.S. has reduced oil-fired electric generation, the central motivation behind PURPA, to just 1 percent of all generation in 2015, down from 16.5 percent in 1978.  Yet in the face of this, PURPA’s stale, static federal mandates remain in place, distorting markets and harming consumers.”

Now more than forty years later, it is time for the type of comprehensive reform which reflects modern energy and economic realities, including the emergence of renewable energy sources, the domestic energy production renaissance which has made America the “Saudi Arabia” of natural gas production and a net energy exporter.

FERC is the federal agency responsible for overseeing PURPA, and the letter expresses the signators’ encouragement by “FERC Chairman (Neil) Chatterjee’s statement that aligning PURPA with our modern energy landscape is one of FERC’s 2019 areas of focus.”

The letter was signed by Americans for Limited Government President Rick Manning, American Energy Alliance President Tom Pyle, Council on National Policy Executive Director and former U.S. Rep. Bob McEwen, Frontiers of Freedom President George Landrith, Council for Citizens Against Government Waste President Tom Schatz, Competitive for Enterprise Institute Center for Energy and Environment Director Myron Ebell, former Assistant Secretary of Interior Becky Norton Dunlop, Constitutional Congress, Inc. Chairman Ken Blackwell, Heartland Institute President & CEO Tim Huelskamp, and Small Business & Entrepreneurship Council President & CEO Karen Kerrigan and was sent to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission on March 4, 2019.

2018 strongest economy since 2005 with 2.9 percent growth

Feb. 28, 2019, Fairfax, Va.—Americans for Limited Government President Rick Manning today issued the following statement on the latest GDP numbers:

“America in 2018 enjoyed the strongest economy since 2005, with 2.9 percent growth, validating President Donald Trump’s three-pronged economic policy. Cutting taxes, cutting regulations and cutting out bad trade deals have proven to be the magic wand that is creating unprecedented job growth at what is typically the end of a positive business cycle. President Obama’s tax, regulatory and trade policies strangled America’s economy that is now just being unleashed. Today’s GDP growth number gives hope that the best is yet to come.”
