ALG supports Congressman Graves’ continuing resolution to defund and delay Obamacare until 2015

Sept. 12, 2013, Fairfax, VA—Americans for Limited Government President Nathan Mehrens today issued the following statement in support of legislation introduced by Rep. Tom Graves (R-Ga.) that would fund the government and defund and delay implementation of Obamacare until 2015:

“Americans for Limited Government supports the Graves continuing resolution that funds the government and defunds and delays implementation of Obamacare until 2015. We urge all members to cosponsor this legislation and stand firm behind Rep. Graves’ effort. Continuing to fund Obamacare and allowing its implementation next year would be a disaster for the nation, and dangerous for the health and well being of the people.”

Non-starter: New plan to eliminate sequestration, raise the debt ceiling, and implement Obamacare in 2015

Sept. 12, 2013, Fairfax, VA—Americans for Limited Government President Nathan Mehrens today blasted as a non-starter a new House Republican plan that would reportedly eliminate sequestration, increase the debt ceiling and still allow Obamacare to be implemented in 2015:

“Sequestration was the price of increasing the debt ceiling in 2011 by $2.1 trillion. Now, the Daily Caller reports some House Republicans are proposing that it be eliminated, and in exchange, they’d agree to increase the debt ceiling — no strings attached — and allow Obamacare to be implemented anyway, just not in 2014.

“At the end of the day, Obamacare will still be implemented. Instead, members should attach HR 2682, the Defund Obamacare Act, to the continuing resolution that denies funding for the Medicaid expansion, the insurance subsidies, and administrative implementation of the law. Make that the only option. If the Senate and White House want to fund the government, they have to defund Obamacare.

“If Republicans do not take a stand now, tens of millions of Americans will be funneled into government-run, taxpayer-funded health care. A majority of Americans will qualify for subsidized insurance under the law. If that’s an outcome House Republicans feel comfortable with, and provide the funds for it, they will own Obamacare’s socialized medicine every bit as much as the Democrats who voted it into being.”

Time for Defund Obamacare Act cosponsors to prove it

Sept. 11, 2013, Fairfax, VA—Americans for Limited Government President Nathan Mehrens today urged the House of Representatives to defeat a proposed continuing resolution for Fiscal Year 2014 that allows funding for the health care law:

“145 members of the House of Representatives have cosponsored and expressed support for legislation that would defund Obamacare, and now is the opportunity to prove it. This is do or die.

“House Republican leadership is proposing one of the most cynical political shell games seen in Washington, D.C. in years. Their proposal is to allow a symbolic vote on defunding Obamacare in conjunction with the continuing resolution that would fund the federal government, but not have that vote be binding on any Senate action to fund the government. This is a gimmick, and any member that votes for it, will own it.

“In real terms, Republicans can claim to their constituents they voted to defund Obamacare, when they voted to actually fund it. House members must take a stand against the law now before it fully takes effect in 2014.”

ALG urges ‘no’ vote on continuing resolution rule that funds Obamacare

Sept. 10, 2013, Fairfax, VA—Americans for Limited Government President Nathan Mehrens today issued the following statement urging members of the House of Representatives to defeat the rule for the continuing resolution that will allow funding for Obamacare:

“House Republicans should stand firm against parliamentary tricks that allow the funding of Obamacare while providing ‘political cover’ through a meaningless vote to ‘defund’ the law that the Senate can simply ignore. Passage of a continuing resolution that funds Obamacare would make House Republicans 100 percent complicit in the implementation of the law. A vote for this rule is nothing more than an attempt to pull the wool over the eyes of the American people and is a direct assault on the promises House Republicans made in 2010 when seeking election to ‘fight efforts to fund the costly health care law.’”

Pretending to defund Obamacare is not the same as defunding it

Sept. 10, 2013, Fairfax, VA—Americans for Limited Government President Nathan Mehrens today issued the following statement urging members of the House of Representatives to defeat a continuing resolution that reportedly will fail to defund Obamacare:

“This is an insult to the intelligence of the American people. Separately passing a defunding Obamacare measure not tied to the continuing resolution that can simply be decoupled by the Senate is a useless gesture that does not merit serious consideration. Whoever votes for such a continuing resolution will be voting to fund Obamacare. This is nothing more than a trick by House leadership to pretend to defund Obamacare without actually doing so.”

More than half a million leave labor force in our sick economy

Sept. 6, 2013, Fairfax, Va.—Americans for Limited Government President Nathan Mehrens today issued the following statement in response to the latest job numbers:

“More than half a million more Americans are not in the labor force in August than in July.  The labor participation rate has dipped to levels last seen when Jimmy Carter was president in 1978.  No matter the happy talk about a lower unemployment rate, Americans are continuing to lose the expectation that they will find a full-time career.  Now, on top of this abandonment of the workforce by many potential employees, job creators are staring of down the barrel of the implementation of Obamacare unless the House of Representatives acts decisively to stop the law in its tracks by defunding it this month.

“Our economy is sick and the American workforce has become increasingly discouraged.  The myth that the declining participation rate is found in the aging population is dispelled in the boomerang college kids who are graduating from college and returning to their parent’s homes due to lack of opportunity.  It is time for the government to finally wake up and stop the regulatory assault on job creation that has had the perverse effect of stripping potential worker’s hope of ever finding a career.”

ALG’s Mehrens to speak at Defund Obamacare rally in front of House Speaker Boehner’s district office

Boehnercare

August 26, 2013, Fairfax, VA—Americans for Limited Government President will speak on Tuesday, August 27 outside House Speaker John Boehner’s district office at Courthouse Plaza, 12 South Plum Street, Troy, Ohio in an event scheduled to begin at 4PM. He issued the following statement urging Speaker Boehner to attach the Defund Obamacare Act to an upcoming vote on the continuing resolution:

“We urge Speaker Boehner to offer an up or down vote on attaching the Defund Obamacare Act to the continuing resolution. This is the American people’s last chance to prohibit implementation of the health care law and to stop the Medicaid expansion and insurance subsidies under the law. If the Senate and Obama refuse action funding the government as a result, it is they who will own the ensuing government shutdown.

“As for Boehner, if he allows Obamacare to be funded, he’ll own it — and so will every House Republican that votes with him. Now is the time for choosing.”

Mehrens will be joined by former Ohio Secretary of State Ken Blackwell; Doc Thompson of the Blaze; Ted Stevenot, President of Ohio LIberty Coalition, an umbrella group of Ohio Tea Parties; Mark Harrington of Created Equal; Bryan Kemper of Priests for Life; Pro-life leader Dr. Joel Brind;  J.D. Winteregg of the Ohio Accountability Project; Nathan Mehrens of Americans for Limited Government; Andrew Pappas of FreedomWorks; Councilman Bobby Phillips; Tea Party Leaders Shannon Hartkemeyer, Sue Hardenbergh, Ralph King; and Janet (Folger) Porter of Faith2Action.  Also speaking are pro-family leaders Bobbi Radeck, Lori Viars and Julie Busby along with Pastors Jonathan Newman, Dick Knodel, Dale Christian, and Andy Douglas.

ALG urges House to attach Defund Obamacare Act to continuing resolution

August 21, 2013, Fairfax, VA—Americans for Limited Government President Nathan Mehrens today issued the following statement urging the House of Representatives to attach H.R. 2682, the “Defund Obamacare Act of 2013” to the upcoming continuing resolution due on Sept. 30:

“The House has the power to stop Obamacare before 2014 by passing budgets that fund all essential items except the health care law. If the Senate and Obama refuse to fund the rest of the government, it is they who will be shutting it down.

“Not only should members cosponsor the Defund Obamacare Act, they must insist that it be attached to an upcoming vote on the continuing resolution. This is the last opportunity to defund this law before the individual mandate goes into effect, before the Medicaid expansion kicks in and before the state insurance exchange subsidies ensue. Otherwise, the health care law will go into effect and it will become permanent.”

ALG to House on $26.1 Billion Special Session States Bailout:“Vote No or Don’t Go!”

August 5th, 2010, Fairfax, VA—Americans for Limited Government (ALG) President Bill Wilson today urged the House of Representatives to “either reject the $26.1 billion bailout to balance bankrupt state budgets like New York and California or stay home.”

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is pulling members of Congress away from the August recess for a special session to vote on legislation that includes $16.1 billion for state Medicaid spending and $10 billion for public teachers funding.

“The American people are sick of these endless bailouts. The message to House members is to vote ‘no’ for another $26.1 billion for the states, or don’t go. The states already got $145 billion in the $862 billion ‘stimulus,” Wilson said, adding, “This is just the latest example of the theft of taxpayers by Nancy Pelosi’s House to pay off teachers union bosses in states that refuse to balance their own budgets.”

“While Americans are struggling to balance their family budgets, politicians in state capitals and in Washington refuse to balance theirs. Instead, government’s solution is to borrow and print more money, and to raise taxes to pay for the unsustainable obligations government has created,” Wilson explained.

The legislation will also limit the use of the Section 956 foreign income tax credits for profits generated overseas.

“If members vote in favor of eliminating the foreign income tax credit, they will be guaranteeing higher unemployment and reduce future capital investment in the U.S, as jobs and business capital will simply be shifted overseas,” Wilson said. “That money simply will not be repatriated into the economy, and could cost the economy $149 billion annually without generating any significant revenue.”

The legislation has already passed the Senate, and a vote in the House could come as early as Tuesday in the special session.

Wilson said that the bailout would disproportionately favor those states that spent the most money: “Out of the estimated 3.3 million public school teachers nationwide, teachers unions were expecting 160,000 layoffs this year — just 4.8 percent of all teachers. 38.1 percent of those layoffs are centered in just three states: 9,000 in New Jersey, 16,000 in New York and 36,000 in California.”

“Making matters worse, once the bailout is converted into public teachers union dues, taxpayers will have financed an additional $40 million to the union bosses’ political coffers, all to help elect Democrats,” Wilson noted.

Wilson concluded, “The American people are watching closely to see who their representatives stand with, bankrupt states and greedy public teachers unions, or taxpayers. Members should either vote no, or don’t go — don’t attend Pelosi’s special give-away session.”

Jobless rate drop belies floundering economy, employment situation

August 2, Fairfax, VA—Americans for Limited Government President Nathan Mehrens today issued the following statement reacting to today’s jobs numbers:

“The job report serves as a continuing indictment of the Obama economy showing that a lower percentage of Americans are participating in the workforce than at any time since 1981.

“At a time when Obama has attacked the value of construction jobs generated by energy projects like the building of the Keystone XL pipeline, our nation lost 6,000 construction jobs in July, a loss that would have been completely offset if the pipeline was being built based upon State Department estimates.

“Our nation’s economy continues to stumble along, held aloft by a private sector that refuses to fail in spite of the inordinate burdens placed upon it by the federal government through its environmental, employment and health care policies.

“It is time for Congress to act by defunding the job killing Obamacare law, grabbing the EPA by the purse strings to prevent it from implementing its global warming, job killing agenda and keeping the radical Labor Department and NLRB from targeting job producers to suit the needs of their masters at Big Labor.

“The almost 20 million Americans who are either unemployed and want a job or in a part time job for economic reasons deserve to have a chance at achieving the American dream.  It is a crime that the Obama Administration religiously continues down a path that is guaranteed to deny them this basic hope.”
