NTIA is violating the law with illegal Internet giveaway, and Congress must act

Aug. 11, 2016, Fairfax, Va.—Americans for Limited Government today issued the following statement in conjunction with signing a coalition letter urging Congress to enforce its two-year prohibition on the transition of the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) functions from the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) to the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN):

“Congress must take available action to stop the illegal Internet giveaway by NTIA, which has been prohibited for the past two fiscal years, and still, NTIA takes action pursuing the transition. NTIA used prohibited agency resources to compile a report stating that the transition proposal met the agency’s criteria, when the transition in itself is illegal. Congress must act by defunding it once again in the appropriations process, and getting an injunction is necessary if NTIA moves in the direction of transition on August 15 when it is expected they will not announce any contract renewal with the current government vendor over the IANA function, ICANN.”

DOJ action against Baltimore police part of national takeover of local police

Aug. 10, 2016, Fairfax, Va.—Americans for Limited Government today issued the following statement in response to findings by the Department of Justice Civil Rights Division against the Baltimore Police Department:

“The courts in Baltimore have already found that Baltimore police were not guilty of any criminal wrongdoing in the death of Freddie Gray. The Department of Justice Civil Rights Division reopening and pouring salt in this wound is a travesty both for the people of Baltimore, and for law enforcement officers across the country who risk their lives every day to keep the peace. If not for the DOJ’s callous politicization of incidents in Ferguson and Baltimore, communities and police might have already come together in an honest dialogue on how to prevent future tragedies. Unfortunately, President Obama would rather attempt to score cheap political points with key voting constituencies than to allow reconciliation.

“The DOJ action in Baltimore is just the first step by the Obama administration to federalize police activity in that city. Eventually, this will become a federal court order consent decree, where the DOJ will sue Baltimore, and the city will settle without contest, agreeing to federal regulation, as has been done in cities across the nation. This regime has been endorsed by a representative of the UN Human Rights Council, and involves DOJ entering into consent decrees with cities to regulate every aspect of policing, including searches, stops and the use of force. This is the nationalization of local policing done through judicial fiat that Congress would never approve.

“What is truly sad is that after almost 8 years in office President Obama continues to be the divider in chief, seeking political gain from creating discord.”

Trump sounds Second Amendment alarm on Clinton judicial appointments

Aug. 10, 2016, Fairfax, Va.—Americans for Limited Government President Rick Manning today issued the following statement in response to Donald Trump’s statement that “Hillary wants to abolish, essentially abolish the Second Amendment. By the way, if she gets to pick… if she gets to pick her judges, nothing you can do, folks. Although the Second Amendment people, maybe there is. I don’t know”:

“Donald Trump is right about one thing. Hillary Clinton will put judges on the bench who want to abolish the Second Amendment individual right to keep and bear arms via judicial decree. And there will be little anyone can do to stop it. By the end of Hillary Clinton’s first term in office, two out of every three federal judges will have been appointed by Democrat presidents. Who knows how many Supreme Court justices she will appoint? But her aim is clear. She will appoint judges who will overturn D.C. v. Heller, a ruling that would strip Americans of their rights—and maybe even their guns.

“Noting how dangerous banning guns might be is not the problem. Undermining the Second Amendment and eroding what is a vital check against federal power is what is truly dangerous. If we ignore this fault line in the Bill of Rights, our society could be flirting with catastrophe. Hillary Clinton, Democrats and their war on guns is far more provocative — and dangerous — than anything Trump might say about it, and that’s the truth.”

Trump delivers conservative economic message in Detroit

Aug. 8, 2016, Fairfax, Va.—Americans for Limited Government President Rick Manning today issued the following statement praising Donald Trump’s speech at the Detroit Economic Club, including his call to make it more cost-effective to do business in the United States:

“Donald Trump has given the definitive answer to #NeverTrump with his low-tax, less regulation, pro- economic growth message that goes to heart of what every Republican purports to believe. Any doubts that Trump intends to roll back President Obama’s pen and phone regulatory assault on the economy should forever be put to rest. And any so-called conservative who clings to their Trump opposition in the wake of this message has lost all credibility.

“Donald Trump is not perfect. It’s possible he might even admit that. But his Detroit Economic Club speech makes it clear he when it comes to the growth of the U.S. economy, Donald Trump is a limited government Republican.”

How often does Hillary Clinton ‘short circuit’?

Aug. 8, 2016, Fairfax, Va.—Americans for Limited Government President Rick Manning today issued the following statement in response to Hillary Clinton admitting that she lied about the presence of classified information on her private email server, saying, “I may have short-circuited and for that, I, you know, will try to clarify”:

“Hillary Clinton admitted that she short circuited while telling another lie about the FBI finding on her private email server, the question is how often does she short circuit?

“Between the six months Hillary spent recovering from a concussion to her weird apparent seizure caught on camera by NBC news to her congenital lying even when it would suit her to tell the truth, it is reasonable to be concerned that Hillary Clinton has some serious medical issues that impact her cognitive abilities. To allay any concerns about her fitness to perform the duties of the presidency, Hillary Clinton should immediately undergo a full neurological work up with the results submitted to an independent set of neurologists for review and then released to the public. It is common for presidential candidates to release medical histories. In an era of hypersensitivity surrounding concussions, there’s no reason why Hillary Clinton with her history of brain trauma shouldn’t allay those concerns publicly.

“The last thing America needs is a president who is continually short-circuiting, while attempting to perform the difficult duties of the office.”

7.3 million 16-64 year olds out of labor force since 2000, unemployment rate 9.3 percent when taken into account

Aug. 5, 2016, Fairfax, Va.—Americans for Limited Government President Rick Manning today issued the following statement in response to the latest jobs numbers:

“Since 2000, about 7.3 million 16 to 64 year olds have dropped out of the labor force or not entered on a net basis. If they were included in today’s unemployment report, the unemployment rate would be 9.3 percent instead of 4.9 percent. The failure of the U.S. to create jobs the past 15 years is now all the more deadly as the economy is once again in trouble, only growing at 1 percent annualized after two quarters. When the next recession occurs, millions of more jobs will be lost overseas. Because the economy has not grown robustly, this time Americans will wind up looking for welfare instead of jobs. That’s pathetic. Growth is the answer that eludes us.”

Trump’s the nominee, deal with it

Aug. 3, 2016, Fairfax, Va.–Americans for Limited Government President Rick Manning today issued the following statement responding to reports that senior Republican officials are “actively” considering options to replace Donald Trump atop the Republican presidential ticket:

“Donald Trump is the nominee and the establishment is going to have to deal with it. These anonymous GOP sources speculating on what the process would be if Donald Trump chose to withdraw from the race for president should be identified and forever run out of the GOP.

“Where were they when Mitt Romney was outed telling donors that 47 percent of the people were on government assistance, creating the exact class warfare narrative that the Democrats craved? These anonymous, cowardly whiners were more than likely busily making fortunes at the GOP trough.

“The only reason that this circular firing squad story exists is because the D.C. establishment class cannot get over that Jeb lost and with his loss, their every four-year financial windfall went away. And that’s the ugly truth, Donald Trump’s real failure is his unwillingness to spend millions in consulting fees to keep the GOP consulting vultures at bay. If these consultants had not lost the popular vote in five of the past six presidential elections, they might have some validity in their concerns, but they are proven losers, and Trump doesn’t like losers.

“So, now they are all-in in trying to stop Trump, and by fostering speculation that he might drop out, they give their cohorts in the mainstream media the excuse to replay some mistakes that Trump has made and the campaign is trying to move on from.

“It is time to root out these conspirators to elect Hillary Clinton president, and not allow them to hide under the cloak of invisibility that cockroaches and vermin depend upon.

“For the rest of us, Donald Trump is the only chance to end the Obama expansion of federal government power, his disastrous EPA regulations, Obamacare and his use of the enforcement powers of the Executive Branch as weapons against his political enemies.”

UN Human Rights Council endorses DOJ nationalization of local policing via consent decrees

Aug. 2, 2016, Fairfax, Va.—Americans for Limited Government President Rick Manning today issued a statement in response to the statement by the United Nations Rapporteur Maina Kai urging the Justice Department Civil Rights Division to federalize every police department in the country via consent decrees:

“The UN Human Rights Council, on which China and Venezuela and Cuba sit, is urging the Department of Justice to nationalize as many as 18,000 local police jurisdictions. That is appalling on its face, but what’s worse is Justice has already been regulating local police for years. These sue and settle lawsuits have been implemented in Newark, N.J., Miami, Fla.Los Angeles, Calif.Ferguson, Mo., Chicago, Ill. and others. Requirements include how searches are conducted, the use of force, the mandatory use of on-body cameras by the police, and so on. The agreements impose years-long compliance review regimes and implementation deadlines and regular reviews by federal bureaucrats.

“The Obama administration has been pursuing these cases for years, and it has largely gone unnoticed. Congress never authorized federal regulation of local police departments and if Obama had requested it legislatively, they likely would have said no. The DOJ has been taking over local police under Congress’ noses using an expansive interpretation of federal law. The ball was dropped but now it must be picked up and Congress needs to stop the nationalizing of local police departments. The fact that the UN Human Rights Council — which includes some of the worst abusers of human rights in the world that hate the U.S. — is cheering for this DOJ national takeover of the police should tell members everything they need to know.

“It’s time to support local police, not render them impotent via federal restrictions against maintaining law and order. No less than the very existence of local government is at stake.”

Sen. Jeff Sessions is right, Paul Ryan, House GOP needs to change on TPP

July 18, 2016, Fairfax, Va.—Americans for Limited Government President Rick Manning today issued the following statement agreeing with Sen. Jeff Sessions’ (R-Ala.) response to Joe Scarborough’s question on MSNBC on U.S. trade policy asking, “So does Paul Ryan need to change [on trade]?” to which Sessions stated, “Absolutely he needs to change. Just like I have,”:

“Senator Jeff Sessions gets it exactly right. Speaker Paul Ryan needs to change on trade and particularly the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP.) Even President Obama’s own economic analysis shows TPP will have virtually no positive impact economically for the U.S., with almost no growth thanks to the deal. Jeff Sessions has had a change of heart on trade, and it is time Republicans in Congress follow his lead, look at the data with clear eyes, and ask if the U.S. lowering trade barriers while other nations engage in currency manipulation — subsidizing their goods and taxing ours — is a good deal for American workers and our economy as a whole. Free trade requires rules, namely, that everyone involved lowers trade barriers. Otherwise it’s not really free trade. Donald Trump and Jeff Sessions are right and GOP leaders like Speaker Ryan need to just say no to President Obama’s attempt to shove his bad trade deal down the throats of Congress after the November election.”

ALG thanks U.S. Reps. Jason Smith, Lynn Westmoreland and Doug Collins for defunding sue and settle in Interior approps

July 14, 2016, Fairfax, Va.—Americans for Limited Government President Rick Manning today issued the following statement praising the House of Representatives led by U.S. Reps. Jason Smith (R-Mo.), Lynn Westmoreland (R-Ga.) and Doug Collins (R-Ga.) for passing an amendment to the Department of Interior appropriations bill that defunds the practice of sue and settle:

“Sue-and-settle arrangements are where a group sues demanding that the EPA or another agency enforce the law in a new, expanded way and the agency enters into a consent decree with the party, which is signed by a judge. This leaves the agency with new powers under the Clean Air and Water and the Endangered Species Acts. But now, thanks to U.S. Reps. Smith, Westmoreland and Collins and a decisive 226 to 202 vote in the House, this practice will come to an end. Sue and settle is an abomination that has no place under representative government, as it cuts Congress out of the process of amending law.”
