President Trump puts America first in blocking Broadcom takeover of Qualcomm

March 12, 2018, Fairfax, Va.—Americans for Limited Government President Rick Manning today issued the following statement praising President Donald Trump and his administration for blocking the foreign hostile takeover of Qualcomm by Singapore-based Broadcom:

“President Trump is 100 percent correct to stop the attempt by Singapore-owned Broadcom to take over Qualcomm Corporation. The transfer of Qualcomm’s technology innovations including its strides toward 5G to a foreign company posed a real danger to our nation’s security and as the Internet of Things is developed would have permanently destroyed our technological advantage.  Every American should call the White House and thank President Trump for this smart, forward looking decision that puts America first.”

Trump tax cuts, deregulation, front and center in February jobs boom

March 9, 2018, Fairfax, Va.—Americans for Limited Government President Rick Manning today issued the following statement reacting to the February jobs report:

“In the first jobs report since the Trump tax cuts have taken full effect, 785,000 more people reported having jobs, showing that the business tax savings are being invested in expansion and job creation, something the President’s critics said was impossible.

“The additional good news is that a large number of these jobs are being created in resource industries, manufacturing and building, activities which are fundamental to robust economic growth. The wealth creation effect of resource-oriented, manufacturing and building jobs, brought on not only by tax cuts by the Trump regulatory reform agenda, gives real hope that our nation’s Gross Domestic Product will finally break through the 3 percent annual threshold that Obama apologists claimed was no longer attainable.

“On top of the macro effects brought on by the Trump economy, the February jobs report further confirms that the job growth is positively impacting all communities, with black unemployment continuing to decrease rapidly while Hispanic unemployment remains low, demonstrating that when the economic pie expands, everyone gets a piece. The Trump economic boom can be summed up by a sign outside an electrical business in North Beach, Maryland, which states, ‘Thanks, President Trump, for the crumbs!'”

Justice Department suit against California takes on the new nullification of immigration law

March 7, 2018, Fairfax, Va.—Americans for Limited Government President Rick Manning today issued the following statement praising Attorney General Jeff Sessions for bringing a legal suit against California’s nullification of federal immigration law:

“The central presumption that the Constitution rests on is the Supremacy Clause, that the Constitution and all laws made pursuant to it are the supreme law of the land. State laws must conform to the federal in cases where the federal government has constitutional authority. It is Congress, not the states, that have the power to make the nation’s immigration laws, and states cannot constitutionally undertake an enterprise to defeat those laws. This isn’t even a grey area. It’s explicitly in the Constitution.

“This case tests the very premise that we can have a national union, a Constitution and a uniform rule of law, or if we will have 50 sets of rules. Today’s suit against California’s nullification is another example of Attorney General Sessions and President Trump’s commitment to restoring the rule of law. The time of sanctuary states and cities is over. We either have laws or we have anarchy.”

Treasury Dept. puts national security first in Broadcom investigation

March 6, 2018, Fairfax, Va.—Americans for Limited Government President Rick Manning today issued the following statement praising the U.S. Treasury Department and the Trump administration for launching a full investigation into the Broadcom hostile takeover of Qualcomm:

“The U.S. Treasury and the Trump administration are absolutely making the right decision to conduct a full and thorough investigation into the Singapore-based Broadcom’s hostile takeover of U.S.-based Qualcomm, a leader in technology innovation. There is too much at stake with the transition to 5G technologies to outsource one of the top producers in that arena to foreign interests. The U.S. needs a secure, strong 5G network, and Qualcomm will undoubtedly be one of the players that helps achieve this goal. This is vital to our national security, and is the very reason CFIUS was founded to block technology transfers that would be detrimental to U.S. national interests.

To quote the letter from the Department of Treasury, ‘Given well-known U.S. national security concerns about Huawei and other Chinese telecommunications companies, a shift to Chinese dominance in 5G would have substantial negative national security consequences for the United States.’

“President Trump has made it his mission to put America first, and he must not allow China to dominate the 5G technology arena. These actions by Treasury and CFIUS demonstrate that the President’s firm commitment is beginning to permeate government decision-making from top to bottom.”

Trump administration delay of Broadcom hostile takeover of Qualcomm puts America first

March 5, 2018, Fairfax, Va.—Americans for Limited Government President Rick Manning today issued the following statement praising the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS) for delaying the Broadcom hostile takeover of Qualcomm for 30 days while it investigates the matter:

“The Trump administration is exactly right in ordering the delay of the attempted technology takeover of San Diego-based Qualcomm Corporation by foreign owned Broadcom.  Broadcom’s hostile takeover attempt would represent one of the greatest U.S. technology transfers in history, as Qualcomm is the inventor who made 3G and 4G technologies work, has new platforms built around mobile technologies to challenge Intel in the chip field, and most importantly, is the leading company in solving the tech puzzle surrounding the coming 5G Internet of Things.

“It would be disastrous for the economic position of the U.S. in the world if Qualcomm’s innovations were to become available to the Chinese who are working to usurp America’s position at the head of the technology innovation class. And the hostile takeover attempt by Broadcom would not only end U.S. dominance over the next generation of communications technologies, it would also make our systems much more vulnerable in the future to hacking due to potential built-in backdoors created by the Chinese.

“The Trump administration seemingly understands these challenges and the U.S. Department of Treasury has taken the right first steps to determine the extent and damage of any potential technology transfer. This is exactly what CFIUS was created to do, and this weekend’s announcement is a positive affirmation that they are paying close attention to this potentially disastrous deal.”

Reform Section 199A of tax code to restore fair competition between farm co-ops and private and independent business

March 2, 2018, Fairfax, Va.—Americans for Limited Government President Rick Manning today issued the following statement echoing the call of 86 members of the House of Representatives calling for reform to Section 199A of the tax code that favors farm coops over private and independent businesses:

“Congress needs to take action immediately in the next funding bill to restore fair competition between farm co-ops and private and independent businesses. Unintentionally, when Congress passed the tax cut bill, it included Section 199A, which gives more favorable tax treatment to producers that sell to co-ops as opposed to other entities. Today, we join with the 86 members of the House who have called for this provision to be revised to equalize tax treatment for selling to co-ops, private and independent businesses. Government should not be picking winners and losers like this in the tax code.”

Trump needs to reverse due process attack

March 1, 2018, Fairfax, Va.—Americans for Limited Government President Rick Manning today issued the following statement responding to President Donald Trump’s statement that he favored an approach to “take the guns first, go through due process second”:

“President Trump’s statement that he wants to take away guns first and have due process later flies in the face of basic constitutional principles under the Fifth Amendment. The President knows better than anyone that a person is innocent until proven guilty, and to deny those basic rights is unacceptable under any circumstance. If he pursues legislation that tramples on due process, he will have cast aside constitutional protection of basic liberties in favor of perceived political expediency.

“The mental health issue is extremely challenging from a legal perspective, but one thing is clear, if the laws in place had been followed in Broward County, Florida, Nikolas Cruz would have received intervention that would have prevented this tragedy either for being adjudicated mentally incompetent, as the Gun Control Act of 1968 provides for, or being prosecuted for making terrorist threats.

“The great danger of President Trump’s confiscate first, ask questions later proposal is that it presumes that the possessor or potential purchaser of a firearm is mentally unstable and should be subjected to thousands upon thousands of dollars of legal fees, allowing simple allegations to be weaponized. This is why no person may be denied liberty without due process. To prevent this very thing from happening.

“When President Trump tries to figure out who’s right on this issue, he should look closely at those applauding him who have wished his political demise and wonder why. Without due process, and the presumption of innocence, the U.S. Constitution might as well be lit on fire because it would be worth less than the paper it was printed on.”

President Trump and CFIUS must block Singapore’s Broadcom takeover of Qualcomm

Feb. 28, 2018, Fairfax, Va.—Americans for Limited Government President Rick Manning today issued the following statement urging President Donald Trump and the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS) to block the hostile takeover of Qualcomm by Singapore’s Broadcom:

“The federal government should immediately reject attempts by Singapore’s Broadcom company to acquire San Diego, California-based Qualcomm Corporation.

“National security threats take many forms, and one area of increasing concern is the attacks on U.S. companies who are instrumental in building the nuts and bolts of the modern Internet.  Qualcomm, out of San Diego, CA, is one such company. The developer of both 3G and 4G technology, Qualcomm is at the cutting edge of creating the next technological leap to 5G. The future leap will see machines talking to and directing the activities of other machines pushing society into a world where driverless vehicles are the norm, and many aspects of life are literally on automatic pilot.

“Qualcomm is one of the companies most likely to create the software to make this system run, but China’s Huawei and South Korea’s Samsung are among those competing to be first.  This matters because whoever wins the battle in developing 5G, will be providing the guts of the world’s industrial future. It can be expected that an unscrupulous company controlled by a foreign government would use this advantage to put backdoors into various systems making the world’s economy vulnerable to blackmail.

“Given the national security importance of Qualcomm’s continuance as a U.S. company, the federal government’s Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States, should immediately meet and block any takeover of the company by its foreign rival.

“In 2016, President Obama succeeded in giving away operational control over the Internet’s domain name system to a foreign focused vendor, now it is up to the Trump administration to deny the foreign takeover of the one company in America that is building the guts of how business will use the Internet in the future. With all the threats around the world, this little discussed one is as important over the long-run as the nuclear threat posed by North Korea and others.  We simply cannot afford to have foreign governments through their managed corporations, have the ability to claim exclusive control the 5G technology that will be running the economy of the future.”

Justice Dept. should take into consideration Disney’s anti-competitive opposition to family-friendly content filtering when contemplating Disney-Fox merger

Feb. 22, 2018, Fairfax, Va.—Americans for Limited Government President Rick Manning today issued the following statement urging the Justice Department to take into consideration Disney’s anti-competitive opposition to family-friendly content filtering when making a decision to approve or disapprove its proposed merger with Fox:

“Parents should be allowed to filter the content that flows into their kid’s minds if they believe it is too violent or otherwise. Disney has led the charge against content filtering for years, and now after this anti-competitive behavior, it is attempting to gain Justice Department approval for its megamerger with Fox. The Attorney General and Justice Department should take into account whether Disney has abided with the spirit and intent of the Family Movie Act in opposing content filtering technologies, and then act accordingly.”

Mueller’s blind eye is troublesome in Russia probe, ignores pro-Clinton Russia ads

Feb. 16, 2018, Fairfax, Va.—Americans for Limited Government President Rick Manning today issued the following statement in response to the claim made in today’s indictments handed out by Special Counsel Robert Mueller that “Defendants’ operations included supporting the presidential campaign of then-candidate Donald J. Trump… and disparaging Hillary Clinton”:

“It is troubling that the Special Counsel ascribes a partisan agenda in his most recent indictments of the alleged Russians involved in buying Facebook ads using false names and bank accounts. The indictment states ‘Defendants’ operations included supporting the presidential campaign of then-candidate Donald J. Trump… and disparaging Hillary Clinton’ yet this statement appears to be untrue in light of anti-Trump ads that were also purchased by the groups named in the indictment. It is entirely possible that Russian actors hoped to create disharmony by pushing ads that incited both sides against one another, but Mueller’s turning a blind eye to this likelihood demonstrates his team’s inability to see beyond the 2016 campaign narrative about Russia involvement in the election.

“As Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein clarified in today’s press conference, ‘There is no allegation in this indictment that any American was a knowing participant in this illegal activity,” meaning there was no tie to the Trump campaign or any other campaign for these activities. Mueller should also correct the record in his indictment. If the Russians were doing pro-Clinton ads, too, then it is impossible to deduce a partisan motive.”
