“Now that some of the smoke has cleared from impeachment, it cannot be lost that Congress once again failed miserably at showing any kind of fiscal discipline in passing the $1.4 trillion spending bill. It is absurd that in a time of unprecedented prosperity, Congress continues to expand domestic spending. Times of prosperity should be opportunities to cut deficits and restrain the cost of government programs, while still meeting the basic safety net needs of those left behind. The fact that Congress continues a wild spending spree bodes poorly for our nation’s ability to afford the real costs of an economic downturn that will eventually happen. The President needs to make fiscal sanity a key component of his 2020 presidential campaign so that in 2021, there will be a political will to significantly cut the exorbitant cost of government. He can start by promoting and defending his own budget, which has in the past provided a pathway to balance with trillions of cuts, when it gets released early next year.”

The organization has long been seen as trying to railroad conservative judicial nominees – even going so far as to break its own rules just to blindside a conservative nominee. It’s disgraceful, and Congress should make it clear that there is a price to pay for the ABA’s games.”

“The AARP, with revenues of more than $1.8 billion and assets of more than $2.4 billion, is an odd nonprofit. It collects a fortune, not from membership dues, but from insurance policies sold to its members. Earlier this year, the organization actually defended the practice of pharmaceutical companies paying kickbacks to insurance companies rather than requiring those savings be directed to consumers. This might have something to do with the fact that AARP receives hundreds of millions of dollars each year from the UnitedHealth Group. AARP’s defense of kickbacks makes it clear that the organization is putting its own interests ahead of its millions of members. This organization does not deserve one dime of federal tax dollars, much less the more than $50 million it received from the federal government in FY 2019. Congress should immediately put a stop to this.”

Dec. 5, 2019, Fairfax, Va.—Americans for Limited Government President Rick Manning today issued the following statement urging the Department of Education to terminate its recognition of the American Bar Association to accredit law schools:

“It is inappropriate for a lawyers’ association to accredit law schools; this is a prime example of crony capitalism. There is an inherent conflict of interest when lawyers are allowed to regulate the entrance of competitors into their field. Due, in part, to the ABA’s numerous requirements of law schools and its restrictions on the practice of law, millions of Americans are unable to afford legal services and are forced to represent themselves in the bewildering legal system. While it is hard to argue that the world needs more lawyers, the ABA accreditation system, by design, limits the number of opportunities to attend law school with the result being the capping new entrants into their field, a clear conflict of interest.  As such, the Department of Education should end the American Bar Association’s credentials to provide law school accreditation.”

“I’m thrilled with the President’s decision to cancel U.S. government subscriptions to the Washington Post and the New York Times. Any paper that smears a 16-year-old Catholic kid, runs an obituary headline referring to a bloody terrorist as an ‘austere religious scholar,’ or prints an anti-Semitic cartoon depicting the Israeli prime minister as a dog is an absolute disgrace and does not deserve taxpayer money.

“Ultimately, there is no rationale for continuing to spend hundreds of thousands of taxpayer dollars subsidizing the financially failing New York Times or the Jeff Bezos-backed Washington Post.  There simply is no basis for continuing to pick winners (the Washington Post and New York Times) and losers (every publication that doesn’t get a federal government subscription subsidy worth hundreds of thousands of dollars). Meanwhile, both the NYT and WaPo long ago ceded any semblance of being  objective sources for news.”

“You may have seen the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) ads with images of pitiful-looking dogs and mournful Sarah McLachlan music playing in the background. Those ads have raised the ASPCA tens of millions of dollars. What those ads don’t mention are the ASPCA’s efforts to harass farmers and tell them how to do their jobs. Inevitably, the ‘reforms’ demanded by the ASPCA and groups like them drive up costs for farmers and increase food prices — hurting the poor. That is why I’m so disappointed that the federal government is giving the ASPCA hundreds of thousands of taxpayers’ dollars — money that the wealthy organization clearly does not need. Farmers play a crucial role in our society, and Congress should see to it that we’re not funding their enemies.”

The FCC’s decision to consider whether to prohibit companies that do business with Huawei and ZTE from accessing the $8.5 billion Universal Service Fund is an important step in protecting the United States’ technological infrastructure from Chinese dependency. Chairman Pai is absolutely right to move forward with this important reform and all of America owes him and the FCC a debt of gratitude for this forward thinking approach as we face a 5G future.”

“Senators Marco Rubio  and Sen. Rick Scott recently wrote a letter to the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) expressing their concern about a grant to a Texas art museum. Their concern stemmed from the fact that the museum created an exhibit featuring images of Che Guevara without providing appropriate context. Americans for Limited Government stands with Sens. Rubio and Scott.

“President Donald Trump should strongly consider replacing Mary Anne Carter as the head of the NEA as it clearly continues to promote the cultural destruction of American values. There is no excuse for a murderous communist thug like Che Guevara who hated America and human rights to be legitimized using U.S. taxpayer dollars. This is exactly the kind of swamp draining that the American people expect from the Trump administration and the fact that the NEA still does not get it is shocking.”

Schiff and coordinated with Speaker Pelosi violates the precepts of minority rights within our system, and the Senate is under no obligation to fund it. There can be no excuse for continuing to fund this sham, which denies the President of the United States basic constitutional rights that every citizen should expect to be honored.”
