ALG Calls Upon MSNBC to Fire All Involved in Fraudulent 8/18/09 Broadcast

August 20th, 2009, Fairfax, VA—Americans for Limited Government President Bill Wilson today in a letter called upon MSNBC Executive Producer Steven Capus to fire all involved with producing a misleading broadcast that Wilson termed a “nefarious assault on decency.”

According to the Wilson letter to Capus, in the MSNBC broadcast at 10:45AM on August 18th “your anchors hysterically raised the specter of impending racial violence — while carefully cropping the very video upon which they based their duplicitous charges. Leading audiences nationwide to believe that militant whites were mounting violence against a black President, they deliberately covered up the fact that the individual they were framing was himself African-American.”

The broadcast showed a video of a man with a machine gun at a protest against the government-run health care legislation in Arizona, a state where citizens are permitted to carry firearms openly.

“His face and hands were cropped out so that viewers could not see that the man was black as the broadcasters breathlessly reported that he was a rightwing white militant,” Wilson explained in a statement.

“This simply goes beyond the pale, and has never in my memory been seen in what is supposed to be a legitimate news broadcast,” Wilson said.

NewsBusters broke the story on MSNBC’s broadcast Tuesday, which Wilson in a statement said was “the most despicable piece of political propaganda ever seen on America’s airwaves.”

Wilson said that the three broadcasters on the air, Contessa Brewer, Dylan Ratigan, and Toure must be fired. “It’s not a question of if they should be fired, it’s a question of how quickly they are canned,” said adding, “The American people need responsible journalism to reach informed decisions, not cropped videos to create the imagery of racial tension.”

In his letter, Wilson wrote that the broadcast “purposely fanned racial tensions” and “endangered the life of the President of the United States.”

Wilson said that the action was “deliberate,” and that if Capus did not act immediately, “MSNBC would permanently be stained as nothing more than a propaganda machine for the hard left.”

ALG Dismisses Non-Profit “Co-ops” as Diversion from Government “Takeover” of Health Care

August 18th, 2009, Fairfax, VA—Americans for Limited Government President Bill Wilson today dismissed talk on Capitol Hill and by Barack Obama of “ditching the so-called public ‘option’” as “nothing more than a temporary distraction by the politicians to take the heat off members who ran into a political buzz saw back home.”

“It’s a diversion,” Wilson said, adding, “It’s all talk. Barack Obama and a few senators are making some noise about these non-profit ‘cooperatives,’ a proposal that no legislative language exists for, is unacceptable to the Democrats’ base of members in the House, and actually has even less of a chance of passage than their true goal, a complete government takeover of the nation’s health care system,” said Wilson.

On Saturday, the Obama Administration publicly moved away from government-run health care. Speaking in Grand Junction, Colorado, Obama said, “I think that we can craft a system in which you’ve got a public option that has to operate independently, not subsidized by taxpayers—it would be nonprofit… they would have to go on the market and get a market price for capital.”

On FOX News Sunday, Senator Kent Conrad (D-ND) said, “The fact of the matter is there are not the votes in the United States Senate for a public option. There never have been.”

The comments have set off a firestorm of backlash from the liberal blogosphere and by core Democrats in the House and Senate.

Wilson said that the Obama Administration is cutting its losses, for the moment. “Politics is a turbulent sea. And Obama is moving his ship out of the storm of opposition to his plans to take over the health care system. He doesn’t want his ship to go down,” Wilson explained.

But, Wilson warned, the move is only temporary. “The idea behind talking about non-profit ‘co-ops’ is to deflate opposition to the actual bills that exist in the House, all of which contain the so-called public ‘option.’ He knows the Democrats in the House won’t go for the ‘co-ops,’ but then his goal is to take the heat off of them by distracting the American people from the actual threat,” Wilson said.

“And then, when the waters are calmer, the push for socialized medicine will begin again after the August recess, when members will not have their constituents to contend with,” Wilson predicted.

Wilson said that it was no mistake that the comments followed what he termed a “lackluster two weeks for Congressional Democrats, where they foolishly decided to attack their own constituents.”

In the pages of USA Today, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Majority Leader Steny Hoyer wrote, “These disruptions are occurring because opponents are afraid not just of differing views — but of the facts themselves. Drowning out opposing views is simply un-American. Drowning out the facts is how we failed at this task for decades.”

Congressman Steve Kagen (WI-CD8) said they were “uncivilized,” and Congressman Baron Hill (IN-CD9) called them “political terrorists.” Congressman Brian Baird (WA-CD3) called opponents of the legislation “Brown Shirts” and compared them to domestic terrorists, “Some of the rhetoric that we’re hearing is… eerily reminiscent of the kind of things that drove Tim McVeigh to bomb the federal building in Oklahoma.”

“These were absolutely rotten things to say about the American people, and now they’re paying the price politically,” Wilson said, adding that “Public support for this plan is receding rapidly.”

According to Rasmussen Reports, 54 percent of voters believe that no health care legislation this year would be a better option than the current bill, which only 35 percent support.

“If you’re Barack Obama, the last thing you want to be talking about politically is a government takeover of medicine that only a third of the electorate wants, and so he is trying to change the subject. But it won’t work,” Wilson concluded.

ALG Demands Napolitano Resign from DHS Over Use of “Kook Website” in Intelligence Gathering

August 12th, 2009, Fairfax, VA—Americans for Limited Government President Bill Wilson today demanded that Department of Homeland Security (DHS) chief Janet Napolitano resign her post for the Department’s use of what Wilson called a “crackpot conspiracy website” in drafting and then issuing a controversial “right-wing extremism” threat assessment to law enforcement in April.

Included 11 times in DHS’ response to ALG’s freedom of information request as a source for the report was the website, www.whatdoesitmean.com, a “news service” that recently reported that a scientist had destroyed a “radio to God.”

“Janet Napolitano must resign immediately from her post at Homeland Security over this outrage,” said Wilson, adding that, “The Department of Homeland Security used a kook website to indict the American people in drafting the ‘rightwing extremism’ memo.  Its use in intelligence gathering was deplorable and highly dubious, not mention insulting to the tens of millions of Americans who were targeted by the memo.”

“Under Napolitano’s watch, government officials who were supposed to be gathering real intelligence on domestic terror threats were instead surfing the web and reading whacky websites, all to create the public perception of ‘rightwing extremism,’” Wilson said.

Wilson explained, “Homeland Security authorized the release of the now-discredited ‘threat’ assessment using whatdoesitmean.com as a source.  It did so without any intelligence sources, crime data, or actual evidence of planned attacks or any groups known to be planning attacks, or any groups with histories of perpetrating attacks that are currently conducting any types of operational recruitment, meeting, or planning attacks.”

Wilson said the assessment was actually a “political document,” designed to “fuel the public’s perception of ‘rightwing extremism,’ nothing more.  And for taking part in a deliberate intimidation campaign against the American people under the guise of protecting them, the only honorable thing for Napolitano to do is to step down,” Wilson declared.

In defining “rightwing extremism,” the Department of Homeland Security memo targets “groups, movements, and adherents… that are mainly antigovernment, rejecting federal authority in favor of state or local authority” and “groups and individuals that are dedicated to a single issue, such as opposition to abortion or immigration.”

Americans for Limited Government filed a Freedom of Information request in April demanding all documents related to the drafting of the controversial “right-wing extremism” memo.  It has now received an interim response from the Department related to “All data and all studies, reports, or other documents regarding data created or reviewed by the Department in general to draft the Report… [and] on the specific groups listed in the footnote on page 2 of the Report that were used by the Department.”

Those studies and reports included 217 pages, “releasable in their entirety, all of which are publicly available,” according to the DHS FOIA response.  All of the data used by the Department are available via the Internet.  A summary of the web-links is included here.

FOX News has exclusively reported on Special Report with Brett Baier on DHS’ response to ALG’s freedom of information request.

“You don’t sick every law enforcement officer in the nation on the American people on the basis of a crackpot conspiracy website, hard-left political groups, and news stories,” Wilson said, concluding, “That’s exactly what happened here.”

ALG Blasts DHS Methodology Used in “Rightwing Extremism” Memo Revealed in Freedom of Information Response by Department

August 11th, 2009, Fairfax, VA—Americans for Limited Government President Bill Wilson today condemned the methodology used by the Department of Homeland Security in issuing a controversial “right-wing extremism” threat assessment to law enforcement in April as “complete speculation.”

“Our worst fears about what went into this memo have been confirmed. The government department that was supposed to be tasked with identifying domestic terrorist threats is apparently using news stories, kooky websites, and conjecture instead of actual hard intelligence reporting and analysis,” said Wilson.

“This is a disgrace, and calls into question what it is that the so-called ‘Extremism and Radicalizaton Branch of the Homeland Environment Threat Analysis Division’ actually does,” Wilson added.

ALG top researcher Don Todd recently gave his assessment of the memo and DHS’ FOIA interim response, “Here you have a bunch of government bureaucrats surfing the web that come up with this crackpot website [http://whatdoesitmean.com], and then they alert all the police agencies in the country to look out for veterans, pro-lifers, and people that believe in states’ rights.”

FOX News today exclusively reported on DHS’ response to ALG’s freedom of information request.

“Not a single study or report was from any government source,” said Wilson. “And again, there was no evidence of any actual active recruitment of ‘disgruntled veterans’ by these groups, no evidence showing that folks who purchase guns or oppose gun-control legislation are necessarily dangerous, and no evidence that the economic downturn or the election of Barack Obama that is fueling any actual ‘resurgence’ of ‘extremism.’”

The memo had reported that “rightwing extremists will attempt to recruit and radicalize returning veterans”.

“We already knew that the memo did not illuminate on any actual planned attacks or any groups known to be planning attacks, or any groups with histories of perpetrating attacks that are currently conducting any types of operational recruitment, meeting, or planning attacks,” said Wilson.

“And now we know why,” Wilson added, explain, “The background DHS used was not based on credible intelligence sources, reporting, and analysis. Instead, what we found is that the Department was apparently surfing the net to see what news stories happened to turn up to support a pre-determined conclusion,” Wilson explained.

“We now know for a fact that DHS was monitoring political speech and thought, whether on the Internet or via other forms of communications,” said Wilson, pointing to websites included in the DHS FOIA response that tracked gun-control legislation.

The memo had claimed that “Many rightwing extremists groups perceive recent gun control legislation as a threat to their right to bear arms and in response have increased weapons and ammunition stockpiling, as well as renewed participation in paramilitary training exercises.”

Previously DHS Secretary Janet Napolitano said, “We are on the lookout for criminal and terrorist activity but we do not – nor will we ever – monitor ideology or political beliefs.”

“DHS’ response to our freedom of information request unfortunately confirms in no uncertain terms that their hunt for ‘rightwing extremists’ was nothing more than a witch hunt,” Wilson concluded.

ALG Condemns Pelosi and Hoyer for Calling Constituents “Un-American”

August 10th, 2009, Fairfax, VA—Americans for Limited Government President Bill Wilson today condemned House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Majority Leader Steny Hoyer for “disgracefully labeling ‘ObamaCare’ opponents across the nation as ‘un-American.’”

“This time, Pelosi and Hoyer have gone too far. This is a complete political meltdown,” said Wilson.

“Voicing dissent to an out-of-control government Hell-bent on taking over the nation’s entire health care system is not ‘un-American.’ It’s every American’s patriotic duty,” Wilson added.

In the pages of USA Today, Pelosi and Hoyer wrote, “These disruptions are occurring because opponents are afraid not just of differing views — but of the facts themselves. Drowning out opposing views is simply un-American. Drowning out the facts is how we failed at this task for decades.”

“There is plenty of room on the national stage for the pros and the cons of government-run socialized medicine to be heard,” said Wilson. “Nobody is being ‘drowned out.’ Instead, folks are hearing supporters and opponents and making up their own minds.”

“Pelosi’s problem is that the opponents are winning the argument,” Wilson explained. “Nancy Pelosi has completely lost her mind. Going after Congress’ own constituents? She has proven once again that the Botox has caused permanent brain damage.”

According to Rasmussen Reports, just 32 percent of voters nationwide favor a single-payer health care system where the federal government provides coverage for everyone. 57 percent are opposed to a single-payer plan.

“The numbers against this abomination are overwhelming, there’s no other way to put it,” Wilson said. “Members of Congress should be listening to their constituents, not to tin-pot demagogues in San Francisco.”

Pelosi and Hoyer’s oped in USA Today, followed other controversial statements by Democratic members of the House. Congressman Steve Kagen said they’re “uncivilized,” and Congressman Baron Hill called them “political terrorists.”

“These statements from members of Congress are simply beyond the pale,” Wilson said.

“We have a reached a point in the political debate when it is clear that not only do members of Congress ignore their own constituents, they disdain the American people for opposing the government’s continued command-and-control approach to running their lives,” Wilson concluded.

ALG Condemns SEIU Beating of Kenneth Gladney at St. Louis Town Hall, Calls for Special Prosecutor to “Investigate White House Complicity”

August 7th, 2009, Fairfax, VA—Americans for Limited Government President Bill Wilson today condemned the brutal beating of activist Kenneth Gladney in South St. Louis County, MO, at a town hall event sponsored by Congressman Russ Caranhan (D-MO) by SEIU members who Wilson said “appears to have been sent out purposely to intimidate the crowd and instigate violence.”

Wilson said that a Special Prosecutor would need to be called “to investigate the possibility of White House complicity in this union thuggery.” The White House told representatives and senators ‘punch back twice as hard’ against opposition to Barack Obama’s government-run health care initiative, and “clearly some of their followers took the message to heart,” Wilson said.

According to Kenneth Gladney’s attorney, David B. Brown, “Kenneth was attacked on the evening of August 6, 2009 at Rep. Russ Carnahan’s town hall meeting in South St. Louis County. I was at the town hall meeting as well and witnessed the events leading up to the attack of Kenneth. Kenneth was approached by an SEIU representative as Kenneth was handing out ‘Don’t Tread on Me’ flags to other conservatives.”

The statement continued, “The SEIU representative demanded to know why a black man was handing out these flags. The SEIU member used a racial slur against Kenneth, then punched him in the face. Kenneth fell to the ground. Another SEIU member yelled racial epithets at Kenneth as he kicked him in the head and back. Kenneth was also brutally attacked by one other male SEIU member and an unidentified woman.”

According to the statement, “The three men were clearly SEIU members, as they were wearing T-shirts with the SEIU logo.”

“This sort of thuggish political violence is what one would expect in Mussolini’s Italy by the Black Shirts,” said Wilson, adding that, “This is pure fascist aggression. The SEIU is sending out goon squads to beat people up who disagree with ObamaCare.  Only a Special Prosecutor can determine if it was done with the knowledge of the White House and Congressman Carnahan.”

After watching the video, Wilson said, “The part where the attackers claimed they were attacked, when Mr. Gladney is clearly on his back, is straight out of the SEIU-ACORN playbook. They train their thugs well. Only, this time, they were caught.”

According to Brown’s statement, Gladney was being civil when he was attacked: “Kenneth was beaten badly. One assailant fled on foot; three others were arrested. Kenneth was admitted to St. John’s Mercy Medical Center emergency room, where he was treated for his numerous injuries. Kenneth was merely expressing his freedom of speech by handing out the flags. In fact, he merely asked people as they exited the town hall meeting whether they would like a flag.”

Brown insisted that Gladney “in no way provoked any argument or altercation, as evidenced by the fact that three assailants were arrested.”

“This is a sad chapter in American history,” Wilson declared, “when a man is cruelly assaulted by political hooligans merely for expressing his beliefs and exercising his First Amendment rights to speak freely and peaceably assemble.”

Wilson said there was a causal relationship between the White House’s call to “punch back” against opposition to Barack Obama’s government-run health care initiative and the incident. “The White House sent out millions of emails, as did the DNC, and the SEIU, all calling on supporters to attend these meetings. And now we know why.”

The SEIU, the Service Employees International Union, was formed by Wade Rathke, also founder of the  group, ACORN, which Barack Obama served as an attorney for. “These are the same people that helped get Barack Obama elected,” Wilson explained.

“Barack Obama has long-time financial and material relationship with ACORN and SEIU. SEIU donated $30.8 million to Obama’s campaign, organized volunteers, and campaigned on his behalf.  ACORN is under investigation for crimes in 15 states, and Barack Obama served as their attorney at one point.  He even gave them $800,000 in 2008 for ‘get-out-the-vote’ efforts.  And now they’re carrying out his dirty work,” Wilson added.

According to the Brown’s statement, “This was a truly senseless hate crime carried out by racist union thugs. Regretfully, Representative Carnahan’s statements blaming Kenneth for being a disruptive force are wholly untrue and slanderous.”

Carnahan today stated that “Sadly, we’ve seen stories about disrupters around the country, and we have a handful of them here in Missouri.”

“The only disruption that occurred was of Mr. Gladney’s rights to life-and-limb as an American citizen,” Wilson said in response, charging that, “Carnahan appears to have been complicit in the incident.”

Wilson also condemned press outlets for failing to report on Mr. Gladney’s story. “Where is the controlled media?” Wilson asked. “Where is CNN? Where is Olbermann and Matthews? They rave about ‘mobs’ but turn a blind eye to a man who was beaten by union thugs. They should hang their heads in shame, or else apply for network anchor positions in Venezuela.”

Wilson said a Special Prosecutor to investigate the White House, SEIU, and Carnahan was necessary because “The American people have no faith in Eric Holder’s Justice Department, which just let two goons off-the-hook who were intimidating voters in 2008 at a Philadelphia polling station with Billy clubs.”

“If anyone thinks there was no relationship between Obama’s call to “punch back” and this brutality in the streets of St. Louis, we have some nice real estate that runs over the East River in New York we’d think they’d be interested in purchasing,” Wilson concluded.

ALG Condemns Congressional Efforts to “Discredit their Own Constituents”

August 6th, 2009, Fairfax, VA—Americans for Limited Government President Bill Wilson today condemned House Leadership for orchestrating what he said was “a deliberate smear campaign against their own constituents to deflect legitimate opposition to their plans to take over the nation’s health care system.”

“There is no question that citizens visiting with their Congressmen is a legitimate exercise in any representative democracy,” said Wilson, adding that, “Attempts by House Democrats to discredit their own constituents are already backfiring, and have only served to embolden residents across the country to adamantly express their opposition to their Congressmen.”

“Citizens feel as if their voices are not heard in Washington in the health care debate, and so they’re letting their representatives know exactly how they feel,” Wilson explained.

According to recent polling from Rasmussen Reports, 60 percent of likely voters are opposed to paying higher taxes to expand government-run health coverage for “all Americans.” 80 percent of likely voters who do have insurance rated their coverage as good or excellent.

“The American people believe they have good health care, which is why they are adamantly opposed to the nationalization of the health care system—against the so-called public ‘option’ that eventually would become a single-payer system. And they’re opposed to what Congress is attempting to do, which boils down to reducing the quality of their care to redistribute it to somebody else,” said Wilson.

According to 2006 Census Bureau estimates*, between 282 and 294.2 million Americans had health coverage: 177.3 million from employment-based insurance, 27.03 million from direct purchase, 40.4 million through Medicare, 38.3 million through Medicaid, and 10.7 million through the military.

“The overwhelming majority of Americans, anywhere from 282 to 294.2 million, already have health coverage—that’s a range of 94.9 to 99 percent. And the government wants screw them over to give welfare to anywhere between 2.85 and 15 million people that don’t have it,” Wilson said.

“Even many House Democrats know it’s a bad idea,” Wilson said, pointing to Blue Dog Congressman Parker Griffith’s (AL-CD5) recent statement that “We don’t want to fix the 15 percent of the problem at the expense of 85 percent of the system that is working.”

“Reorganizing the entire health care system makes absolutely no sense, unless the goal is a complete takeover of the health care system,” said Wilson.

Wilson said local efforts in Congressional districts across the country will most likely continue escalate throughout the month of August, culminating in the August 22nd “Recess Rally,” which Americans for Limited Government is co-sponsoring.

“It’s Congress’ job to listen to their constituents at home, not for their constituents to listen to what Washington tells them to do. It’s called representation for a reason,” Wilson concluded.

ALG Urges Senate Republicans to Block Unanimous Consent Resolution on 14 Obama Nominees

August 4th, 2009, Fairfax, VA—Americans for Limited Government President Bill Wilson called upon 40 Senate Republicans to block a unanimous consent resolution on 14 controversial nominations by Barack Obama that Wilson said “do not deserve the unqualified support of the U.S. Senate.”

“Barack Obama has made some of the most radical appointments in U.S. history, and these 14 nominations in particular should be subject to a recorded vote at a minimum,” said Wilson, adding that “Some of the nominees have serious conflicts of interest or are otherwise unqualified for the position they are expected to serve in.”

Americans for Limited Government has published a brief background on each of the 14 nominees stating the organization’s objections, some of which include:

• Cass Sunstein (Admin. Off. Of Information and Reg. Affairs, OMB): Favors giving animals right to sue, favors limits First and Second Amendment limits, and “would like another Bill of Rights to guarantee employment, food, clothing, shelter, education, recreation, and health care.”

• Arturo Valenzuela (Asst. Sec. for Western Hemisphere Affairs): Has defended Hugo Chavez’s suppression of the free press in Venezuela, favored better relations with Cuba, and supported Obama Administration policy against Honduras.

• John Fernandez (Asst. Sec. of Commerce for Economic Development) “John Fernandez approved the spending of $1 million of taxpayers’ money for the demolition of a building on private property. He later took a job with the property’s owner.”

• Karen Kornbluh (Perm. Rep. of the U.S. to OECD): Authored the 2008 Democrat Party platform and her husband works for a firm that lobbies the State Department.

• Julia A. Clark (General Counsel for Federal Labor Relations Authority): “Julia Clark profited from her time at the Anti-Trust Division by immediately joining an antitrust law firm upon leaving the Justice Department.”

• Patricia Smith (Solicitor for Labor Dept.): “Designed a program in NY to use community activist groups to enforce wage and hour laws…” deputizing union officials “to shake down employers that are organizing targets of the union.”

• John Sullivan (Commission for FEC): Was a longtime union counsel in election cases. According to the background, “FEC regulations already strongly favor unions compared to other entities and such concern exists about how he would push the FEC regulations as regards issues such as ‘member communications,’ a loophole that unfairly benefits unions while muzzling other entities.”

“The American people have a right to know where each of their Senators stands on the appointment of these controversial nominees,” said Wilson, adding, “Many of them are quite radical, and these conflicts of interest have not been properly vetted by Senate committees.”

“As it stands now, these 14 contentious nominees will fly through via unanimous consent, which is Harry Reid’s way of bulldozing each of the nominees through without any debate nor any vote,” Wilson said.

According to the U.S. Senate website, a unanimous consent agreement is a “unanimous consent request setting terms for the consideration of a specified bill or other measure. These agreements are usually proposed by the Majority Leader or floor manager of the measure, and reflect negotiations among Senators interested in the measure. Many are ‘time agreements,’ which limit the time available for debate and specify who will control that time. Many also permit only a list of specified amendments, or require amendments to be to the measure. Many also contain other provisions, such as empowering the Majority Leader to call up the measure at will or specifying when consideration will begin or end.”

“While Barack Obama and Harry Reid may wish that these 14 controversial appointments not be given too much attention, it is in the American people’s interests that those appointed to the public trust not have conflicts of interest, radical affiliations, or otherwise lack experience,” Wilson concluded.

ALG Launches “Operation Private Option,” Calls Upon 400,000 Activists Nationwide to Oppose “ObamaCare”

July 31st, 2009, Fairfax, VA—Americans for Limited Government President Bill Wilson today urged more than 400,000 ALG activists nationwide to “hold rallies, demonstrations, tea parties, and protests in opposition to Barack Obama’s insidious efforts to take over the health care system and take away private health options from the American people.”

Wilson said that “Homegrown, grassroots efforts staged in front of House members’ district offices and at town hall meetings across the nation against ObamaCare are all the more imperative as Blue Dog Democrats attempt to defend the compromise they reached this week with House leadership on the language for the health care bill.”

Wilson said local efforts in Congressional districts throughout the month of August will culminate in the August 22nd “Recess Rally,” which Americans for Limited Government is co-sponsoring.

“There are going to be boots on the ground in districts across the country, and they’re not going to be happy when the politicians return home for their August recess and try to defend this mealy-mouth ‘compromise’ reached by the Blue Dogs,” Wilson promised.

The deal reached between Blue Dog lead negotiator Congressman Mike Ross (AR-CD4) and House leaders would cut $50 billion out of a bill that Kaiser Health News reports would cost more than $1.5 trillion.

Said Wilson of the deal, “96.6 percent of a catastrophe is still a catastrophe. The government-run health care legislation still creates an unsustainable entitlement that will permanently shackle taxpayers to an insurmountable burden that can never possibly be paid back.”

The House legislation proposes to cover individuals individuals up to 400 percent of the poverty level, or making approximately $43,320 or less annually, will be eligible for some level of health coverage under the plan whether through the public “option,” Medicaid, or otherwise.

“Barack Obama has promised the impossible: expanding care to 45 million without raising costs or increasing the deficit,” said Wilson.

“An average premium goes for $4,700, bringing the total cost of the additional care to 45 million more people to roughly $211.5 billion extra annually. That money is not going to grow on trees—it’s going to come off the printing press and from overseas loans from China and Japan,” Wilson explained.

Wilson instead promoted what he called the “private option” as an alternative to the bill proposed in Congress. “We desperately need entitlement reform, not an entitlement expansion. The private option means giving all Americans the option not to participate at all in any government-sponsored plan,” said Wilson.

Wilson continued, “It means unrestrained consumer choice, unrestricted insurance companies, the removal of all insurance coverage mandates, no obligatory coverage either for employers or individuals, market-set pricing instead of government-appropriated and controlled pricing, increased competition by reducing and removing those barriers to entry for insurance companies, pharmaceuticals, and other health care institutions, and finally, entitlement reform.”

“Medical institutions are already in the red, and they will not emerge by permanently funding the health care system by a government that has expanded the national debt for every single year since 1958. That is a path to certain national insolvency,” Wilson concluded.

ALG Applauds Blue Dogs for Postponing “ObamaCare” Vote until after Recess

July 29th, 2009, Fairfax, VA—Americans for Limited Government President Bill Wilson today praised the Blue Dog Democrat coalition for delaying consideration of the House version “ObamaCare” until after the August recess.

“The American people should be grateful to the Blue Dogs for winning them a month,” said Wilson, “This will give constituents the time they need to visit with their representatives and let Congress know just how bad government-run socialized medicine will really be for them.”

“And once members see, hear, and live with the overwhelming opposition to the Obama plan for a month, there is no question that they will have no choice but to vote against it,” Wilson added.

According to the Hill, “In exchange for putting off a floor vote until after Labor Day, the Energy and Commerce Committee may be allowed to continue its markup of the healthcare bill this week even if an agreement has not been reached between committee Chairman Henry Waxman (D-Calif.) and seven Energy and Commerce Blue Dogs over the content of the bill.”

Said Wilson, “The only concession the Blue Dogs made was not even much of a concession—to resume committee work on the bill, which includes their own slate of amendments that committee chair Henry Waxman has not agreed to.”

According to the Blue Dog chief negotiator Congressman Mike Ross (AR-CD4), “All I can say is that if he begins a markup without an agreement, we’re certainly prepared to move forward and offer our amendments.”

“This is a stare-down between Mike Ross and Nancy Pelosi,” Wilson said, “and Nancy Pelosi is the one who just blinked.”

This followed threats by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Energy and Commerce committee chairman to bypass the committee. Waxman had said “we are going to have to look at perhaps bypassing the committee” if no agreement could be reached with at least seven Blue Dog Democrats on the committee that to date have held up the legislation because of its high price tag, which will cost more than $1.5 trillion according to Kaiser Health News.

“This is inside baseball,” said Wilson. “Pelosi and Waxman overplayed their hand, the Blue Dogs smacked them down hard, and now the appearance of a ‘compromise’ to resume a committee markup they threatened to bypass is merely a face-saving campaign where the Blue Dogs politely agree to pretend that the Speaker is still in charge of the House on this issue, when in fact she is no longer calling the shots.”

Currently, there are 52 members of the Blue Dog Democrats in the House of Representatives, more than enough votes to defeat the proposal should they vote with the 178 member House Republican caucus.

Markup in the Energy and Commerce committee is now expected to resumed this week after several setbacks. Markup sessions were twice cancelled as Waxman sought to avoid taking up Blue Dog proposals and iron out an agreement out of committee. According to the Hill, the Blue Dogs have threatened to vote with Republicans on the committee against the bill.

“I won’t allow them to hand over control of our committee to Republicans,” Waxman had told reporters.

Wilson encouraged Blue Dogs on the committee to “gut” the bill. “The Blue Dogs have raised several legitimate concerns against the House legislation ranging from the cost to the disastrous impact upon small businesses,” said Wilson, “and the only way the American people will know that they’ve been properly addressed is if they are aired out in public hearings.”

Wilson called on Americans nationwide to visit with their representatives over the August recess. “The American people owe the Blue Dog coalition a debt of gratitude for giving them a valuable opportunity to meet with their representatives before a vote on this abomination. Now they must meet with their representatives every day and voice their opposition to this plan loudly.”
