Jeff Sessions is a great Attorney General

July 20, 2017, Fairfax, Va.—Americans for Limited Government President Rick Manning today issued the following statement in defense of Attorney General Jeff Sessions:

“Jeff Sessions is the best Attorney General President Trump could have. He is doing the difficult job of unwinding the politicized mess left behind by his Obama appointed predecessors.  Rather than turning a blind eye, Attorney General Sessions is cracking down on illegal immigration, deporting MS-13 gang members and other illegal alien criminals, and ending the war on police. Sessions’ recusal on matters related to the 2016 campaign and the Russia investigation, while perhaps unnecessary, underscores his commitment to the restoring the rule of law, which after the Obama administration’s abuse of power was sorely needed and was one of Trump’s key campaign promises. Any attempt to remove him from office at this stage would be a catastrophic mistake.

“If the President expects the American people to stand by him in the months ahead on the tough road to draining the swamp, he must stand by those who have stood with him. Not only is Jeff Sessions an outstanding Attorney General, as the first Senator to endorse Trump, he is one of the major reasons Trump did solidly in the south during the GOP primary. He should prefer that Sessions continue running 99 percent of the Justice Department while the Russia investigation wraps up than to turn over 100 percent of DOJ to the deep state for the months or year that it would take to confirm a new Attorney General through a Senate, that is in many respects, is still Democratic Party controlled.”

Senate should still hold vote on repealing Obamacare

July 19, 2017, Fairfax, Va.—Americans for Limited Government President Rick Manning today issued the following statement urging Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell to proceed with his plan to hold a vote repealing most of Obamacare via budget reconciliation:

“After almost a decade of campaigning against Obamacare, it would be legislative malfeasance not to finally have a vote in the Senate putting every Senator on the record for where they stand. It is inexcusable for any Senator who voted to send language to then-President Obama in 2015 when they knew it would be vetoed to vote against the same language today when it would be signed. Obamacare was designed to fail. This is fully the responsibility of the former President and the Democrats who enacted it. Now it’s time for the Republican majority in both houses to wipe this stain out of the U.S. law books so that they can direct their attention to allowing free market solutions that will finally drive premium costs down and increase availability.

“While Republican Senators like Shelley Moore Capito and Lisa Murkowski have indicated that they will no longer support repeal, their constituents who voted them into office at least partially due to the repeal promise deserve a vote that has real consequences. It is up to the people of Alaska and West Virginia to let these Senators know exactly how they feel about the need to repeal Obamacare to give the U.S. health care system the chance to heal.”

Presidential Election Commission needed to ensure honest elections

July 19, 2017, Fairfax, Va.—Americans for Limited Government President Rick Manning today issued the following statement in support of the President’s Election Integrity Commission:

“Every American should agree that on the basic idea that elections should be fair and honest with only those legally able to participate voting.  The President’s Election Integrity Commission will work to assure that the sanctity of one eligible person, one vote is maintained. Anyone complaining about this process should be asked why they oppose honest elections where only those legally able to vote under the U.S. Constitution participate.”

Faithless Senators Capito and Murkowski were for Obamacare repeal before they were against it

July 18, 2017, Fairfax, Va.—Americans for Limited Government President Rick Manning today issued the following statement blasting Sens. Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.) and Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) for killing the Senate Republican bid to repeal Obamacare:

“In 2015, 48 Senate Republicans who are still serving today including Shelley Moore Capito and Lisa Murkowski had no problem passing legislation that repealed the guts of Obamacare. Together with the House of Representatives, this legislation was put on former President Barack Obama’s desk, where it was promptly vetoed. That bill included phasing out Medicaid expansion, ending the premium subsidies, cost-sharing subsidies, the individual and employer mandates, reinsurance, risk corridors and risk-adjustment, and the taxes and spending from the health care law.

“All that needed to happen was for the Senate to vote for exactly the same legislation it adopted for in 2015, and prove that it was not nothing more than a show vote. This terrible outcome proves Senators Capito and Murkowski were never sincere in their promise to repeal Obamacare. They were just phonies. If the 2015 bill was good enough for Obama to veto, it should have been good enough for President Donald Trump to sign. Instead Capito and Murkowski, turned out to be faithless Senators who through their failure are putting the GOP Congressional majority at risk.

“2018 should be a big year for Republicans hoping to significantly grow their majority due to the number of Senate Democrats forced to defend themselves in states won by President Trump. If the failure to put together a simple majority to send the same repeal legislation to the House that was passed in 2015, it is very possible that 2018 will become a political killing field for Republicans, with disastrous national consequences in 2019.

“Senate Majority Leader McConnell needs to let the situation cool for now, but before anyone goes home in August, he needs to convince Capito, Murkowski and any other faithless Senators that there is no going back and that the negative advertising writes itself if the Senate fails to keep faith with those who voted them into office.

“It will be interesting to see if groups like American Action Network which spent hundreds of thousands of dollars attacking House Republican Freedom caucus members for their successful efforts to improve the bill to replace Obamacare will show the same vigor in attacking their philosophical compatriots in the Senate who oppose the very bill they voted for in 2015.”

President Trump is keeping his promise on reopening NAFTA

July 17, 2017, Fairfax, Va.—Americans for Limited Government President Rick Manning today issued the following statement praising President Donald Trump for reopening the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) to renegotiation between the U.S., Canada and Mexico:

“President Trump is keeping his campaign promise to get a better deal for American workers and businesses on NAFTA. The American people finally have an advocate in the White House dedicated to putting America first on the global economic stage. The President has not forgotten those who got him elected in 2016, and now it is time for the U.S. Trade Representative to get a better deal for America that serves U.S. interests instead of shipping our jobs and production abroad. It’s about time that we truly have an administration that is working on behalf of the American people instead of multinational corporate interests.

“Ironically, former President Obama reopened NAFTA too when he attempted to ram the ill-conceived Trans-Pacific Partnership through Congress. The major difference was the 12-nation TPP was designed to make NAFTA even worse for American workers all the while locking it into place within a larger, global framework. President Trump knows that the U.S. economy has not grown above an inflation-adjusted 4 percent since 2000 nor above 3 percent since 2005, clearly demonstrating the need to renegotiate the price of doing business in America.”

“Senator Majority Leader McConnell is doing the exact right thing by canceling the first two weeks of August recess in response to Democrat obstruction. It’s time for the Democrats’ collective temper tantrum to end and Senator McConnell must continue to ratchet up the pressure so that President Trump’s nominees and agenda have a chance of being considered. Americans for Limited Government is very encouraged by this latest announcement by the Majority Leader and urge him to take every necessary step to end the Democrats’ abuse of Senate rules.”

CAFE Standards get much need review

July 10, 2017, Fairfax, Va.—Americans for Limited Government President Rick Manning today issued the following statement about the Department of Transportation CAFE standards review:

“This action by the Department of Transportation will allow the Trump Administration to fully evaluate the wisdom of moving forward with Obama’s unrealistic and destructive Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards. It is clear that upon a full and fair review of these standards that Obama’s overreach should be either rescinded entirely or at least substantially rolled back. Secretary Elaine L. Chao’s actions today demonstrate once again that the Trump administration is serious about growing the U.S. economy.”

Conservatives Slam Governor Christie For Threatening Government Shutdown

June 30, 2017, Fairfax, Va.—The following joint statement by Rick Manning, President of Americans for Limited Government, Jenny Beth Martin, President & Co-Founder of Tea Party Patriots and Colin Hanna, President of Let Freedom Ring USA, Inc., was issued in response to New Jersey Governor Chris Christie’s government shutdown threat:

“Governor Christie’s healthcare cash grab is a political vendetta. Now he’s threatening to shut down the government, punish Garden State taxpayers and take away people’s healthcare, all because of a political vendetta. As the Wall Street Journal rightly put it, ‘Mr. Christie’s raid is a tax and regulatory mugging masked as public charity.’”

Senate should hold votes on Kate’s Law and anti-sanctuary cities bills

June 30, 2017, Fairfax, Va.—Americans for Limited Government President Rick Manning today issued the following statement praising the House for passing Kate’s Law and legislation against sanctuary jurisdictions, and urging Senate action on the same:

“If Senate Democrats want to block legislation to willfully impede federal immigration law enforcement and even protect illegal immigrants who happen to murder U.S. citizens, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell should make them vote on that every other week between now and November 2018, and then we’ll see how voters in Florida, Indiana, Missouri, Montana, West Virginia, Wisconsin, Michigan, Pennsylvania and Ohio, all states that Trump carried in 2016, respond to Senators who oppose the rule of law and protecting U.S. citizens.

“These bills deserve a vote. The House has done its job, and now it is up the Senate to hold votes on these important bills. Congress must defund sanctuary jurisdictions. Congress must block states, cities and counties from impeding the enforcement of federal immigration laws. And Congress must beef up penalties for repeat illegal alien offenders who commit crimes. Enough is enough. The lawlessness must end.”

Cruz amendment would lower taxpayer subsidies, insurance premiums, should receive favorable budget score

June 30, 2017, Fairfax, Va.—Americans for Limited Government President Rick Manning today expressed support for a reported amendment by Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) that would allow insurers that sell federal-regulated plans to also sell plans that do not have to comply with federal regulations:

“The Cruz amendment, by virtue of allowing non-federally regulated plans to be sold in every state, would either mean there are fewer taxpayer-subsidized plans or in the very least, the potential subsidy for those particular plans covering fewer items would go down. As a result, the Cruz amendment ought to receive a favorable budget score as lowering the deficit, since by definition it must reduce federal spending. It is therefore a budgetary provision that should be allowed on the Obamacare replacement budget reconciliation bill. But beyond that, it could be the key compromise that gets this legislation across the finish line and helps to bring down health insurance premiums, through competition for all types of plans and allowing consumers to choose if they want regulated plan or not.”
