With any luck, trimming the payroll will dislodge some ‘Resisters’ from the Administration.”

“The Department of Treasury should end the Federal Reserve program Directo a Mexico that aids illegal aliens in making remittance payments to Mexico reported on by Michelle Malkin and Judicial Watch. It is incumbent upon Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin to conduct a thorough review of foreign remittances including this program and implement policies to deny the capacity of foreign nationals illegally in our country to send money home. Remittances are one of the primary funding mechanisms the human trafficking cartels and the greatest lure for illegal aliens and the federal government needs to take every action available under the law to deny traffickers this money source.”

Sept. 12, 2019, Fairfax, Va.—Americans for Limited Government President Rick Manning today issued the following statement urging Congress to retain the prohibition on the Department of Housing and Urban Development conditioning receipt of community development block grants on making changes to local zoning ordinances:

“The temptation is always strong at the federal government level to exert power over local governments, and one such area is zoning. This is why Americans for Limited Government and members of Congress most notably Senator Susan Collins of Maine and U.S. Rep. Paul Gosar of Arizona who fought the Obama administration on the Affirmatively Furthering Fair Housing regulation when HUD attempted to condition federal funds on changes to local zoning by enacting a Congressional prohibition against the regulation. Because this prohibition is based on the principle of federalism and not any animus toward one administration over another, it is important that it be retained in the appropriations process this month and that it be respected by the Trump administration HUD leadership.”

“With more and more people abandoning poorly-run public transit systems, Congress should eliminate the New Starts Transit Program, which is administered by the U.S. Department of Transportation and subsidizes the expansion of subways, streetcars, and dedicated bus lanes. If a community wishes to build or expand a transit system, the community should pay for it – without federal subsidies paid for by out-of-state residents who may never visit the area. It’s simply harder to justify federal transit subsidies as transportation options, such as Uber, Lyft, and scooter rentals, increase; and ending this transit subsidy program would save $2.7 billion next fiscal year.”

“The U.S. Institute of Peace is a failed, Cold War Era idea. Since its founding, we’ve repeatedly been at war and lost the lives of thousands of U.S. service members. There are dozens of foreign policy think tanks in the United States, and it is doubtful that the closing of the Institute would make any notable difference in U.S. policy. Eliminating funding for the Institute would save $38.6 million next year alone. To get our fiscal house in order, tough budget cuts will likely be needed; but this cut is not a difficult one — and it should be made immediately. Finally, closing the Institute would free up its Washington, D.C. headquarters – which cost taxpayers over $180 million — so that the trophy office building could be sold off to allow for further deficit reduction.”

Aug. 26, 2019, Fairfax, Va.—Americans for Limited Government President Rick Manning today issued the following statement urging the elimination of the Land and Water Conservation Fund and beginning the return of lands to the states, localities, and the private sector as part of Americans for Limited Government’s program to identify wasteful federal spending:

“The federal government owns too much land — approximately 640 million acres. This is more land than is contained in the 21 states in the Northeast and the Midwest. In spite of its massive holdings, the government continues to buy more with funds from the Land and Water Conservation Fund. At the same time, the government cannot properly maintain the land it now owns. In fact, the federal government has a huge backlog of deferred maintenance projects; adding up to more than $11 billion at the National Park Service alone. For these and other reasons, the Land and Water Conservation Fund, which currently contains more than $21 billion, should be eliminated, and the federal government should begin returning its lands to the states, localities, and the private sector while using the funds to meet the backlog costs and make our national parks great again.”

Aug. 26, 2019, Fairfax, Va.—Americans for Limited Government President Rick Manning today issued the following statement urging zeroing out land acquisition for the U.S. Forest Service budget as part of Americans for Limited Government’s program to identify wasteful federal spending:

“Only in Washington, D.C. does an organization that can’t handle its current job get lavished with more money than it requests and asked to do even more. While there are many hard-working employees at the U.S. Forest Service, the agency has been badly mismanaging land for decades, which has enabled catastrophic fires to occur. Due to this mismanagement, the agency now has a huge backlog of work to do to keep its lands from continuing to be a threat to public safety.  Last year, the Trump Administration requested very little money for land acquisition by the Forest Service, but Congress ignored this request and appropriated over $65 million. The Forest Service’s 193 million acres is clearly more than enough for it to manage so Congress should honor the President’s budget request for the next fiscal year and zero out funding for Forest Service land acquisition and focus instead upon engaging in proper forest management.”

“Under the previous administration, the National Science Foundation’s Directorate for Social, Behavioral, and Economic Sciences funded a study of old fish bones in an abandoned town in Tanzania. To reduce such unnecessary spending in the future, Congress should eliminate funding for this soft-science NSF directorate. There are plenty of reasons to question the need for a government agency that funds civilian research, especially one that, in recent years, funded research into the ability of fish to run on a treadmill. Eliminating this wasteful NSF directorate would save taxpayers over $200 million a year.”

“Wind energy development is no longer a nascent industry, having grown from 0.7 percent of the grid in 2007 to 6.6 percent in 2018 at 275 billion kWh. The rationale behind the wind production tax credit has always been that it is necessary to attract investors. However, wind energy development has matured to the point where government subsidization of billionaires like Warren Buffett cannot be justified, neither from an energy production standpoint nor a fiscal one. Americans for Limited Government strongly urges Congress to end the Wind Production Tax Credit. The best part is, they only need to do nothing as it expires at the end of the year.”
