ALG Launches “Operation Private Option,” Calls Upon 400,000 Activists Nationwide to Oppose “ObamaCare”

July 31st, 2009, Fairfax, VA—Americans for Limited Government President Bill Wilson today urged more than 400,000 ALG activists nationwide to “hold rallies, demonstrations, tea parties, and protests in opposition to Barack Obama’s insidious efforts to take over the health care system and take away private health options from the American people.”

Wilson said that “Homegrown, grassroots efforts staged in front of House members’ district offices and at town hall meetings across the nation against ObamaCare are all the more imperative as Blue Dog Democrats attempt to defend the compromise they reached this week with House leadership on the language for the health care bill.”

Wilson said local efforts in Congressional districts throughout the month of August will culminate in the August 22nd “Recess Rally,” which Americans for Limited Government is co-sponsoring.

“There are going to be boots on the ground in districts across the country, and they’re not going to be happy when the politicians return home for their August recess and try to defend this mealy-mouth ‘compromise’ reached by the Blue Dogs,” Wilson promised.

The deal reached between Blue Dog lead negotiator Congressman Mike Ross (AR-CD4) and House leaders would cut $50 billion out of a bill that Kaiser Health News reports would cost more than $1.5 trillion.

Said Wilson of the deal, “96.6 percent of a catastrophe is still a catastrophe. The government-run health care legislation still creates an unsustainable entitlement that will permanently shackle taxpayers to an insurmountable burden that can never possibly be paid back.”

The House legislation proposes to cover individuals individuals up to 400 percent of the poverty level, or making approximately $43,320 or less annually, will be eligible for some level of health coverage under the plan whether through the public “option,” Medicaid, or otherwise.

“Barack Obama has promised the impossible: expanding care to 45 million without raising costs or increasing the deficit,” said Wilson.

“An average premium goes for $4,700, bringing the total cost of the additional care to 45 million more people to roughly $211.5 billion extra annually. That money is not going to grow on trees—it’s going to come off the printing press and from overseas loans from China and Japan,” Wilson explained.

Wilson instead promoted what he called the “private option” as an alternative to the bill proposed in Congress. “We desperately need entitlement reform, not an entitlement expansion. The private option means giving all Americans the option not to participate at all in any government-sponsored plan,” said Wilson.

Wilson continued, “It means unrestrained consumer choice, unrestricted insurance companies, the removal of all insurance coverage mandates, no obligatory coverage either for employers or individuals, market-set pricing instead of government-appropriated and controlled pricing, increased competition by reducing and removing those barriers to entry for insurance companies, pharmaceuticals, and other health care institutions, and finally, entitlement reform.”

“Medical institutions are already in the red, and they will not emerge by permanently funding the health care system by a government that has expanded the national debt for every single year since 1958. That is a path to certain national insolvency,” Wilson concluded.

ALG Applauds Blue Dogs for Postponing “ObamaCare” Vote until after Recess

July 29th, 2009, Fairfax, VA—Americans for Limited Government President Bill Wilson today praised the Blue Dog Democrat coalition for delaying consideration of the House version “ObamaCare” until after the August recess.

“The American people should be grateful to the Blue Dogs for winning them a month,” said Wilson, “This will give constituents the time they need to visit with their representatives and let Congress know just how bad government-run socialized medicine will really be for them.”

“And once members see, hear, and live with the overwhelming opposition to the Obama plan for a month, there is no question that they will have no choice but to vote against it,” Wilson added.

According to the Hill, “In exchange for putting off a floor vote until after Labor Day, the Energy and Commerce Committee may be allowed to continue its markup of the healthcare bill this week even if an agreement has not been reached between committee Chairman Henry Waxman (D-Calif.) and seven Energy and Commerce Blue Dogs over the content of the bill.”

Said Wilson, “The only concession the Blue Dogs made was not even much of a concession—to resume committee work on the bill, which includes their own slate of amendments that committee chair Henry Waxman has not agreed to.”

According to the Blue Dog chief negotiator Congressman Mike Ross (AR-CD4), “All I can say is that if he begins a markup without an agreement, we’re certainly prepared to move forward and offer our amendments.”

“This is a stare-down between Mike Ross and Nancy Pelosi,” Wilson said, “and Nancy Pelosi is the one who just blinked.”

This followed threats by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Energy and Commerce committee chairman to bypass the committee. Waxman had said “we are going to have to look at perhaps bypassing the committee” if no agreement could be reached with at least seven Blue Dog Democrats on the committee that to date have held up the legislation because of its high price tag, which will cost more than $1.5 trillion according to Kaiser Health News.

“This is inside baseball,” said Wilson. “Pelosi and Waxman overplayed their hand, the Blue Dogs smacked them down hard, and now the appearance of a ‘compromise’ to resume a committee markup they threatened to bypass is merely a face-saving campaign where the Blue Dogs politely agree to pretend that the Speaker is still in charge of the House on this issue, when in fact she is no longer calling the shots.”

Currently, there are 52 members of the Blue Dog Democrats in the House of Representatives, more than enough votes to defeat the proposal should they vote with the 178 member House Republican caucus.

Markup in the Energy and Commerce committee is now expected to resumed this week after several setbacks. Markup sessions were twice cancelled as Waxman sought to avoid taking up Blue Dog proposals and iron out an agreement out of committee. According to the Hill, the Blue Dogs have threatened to vote with Republicans on the committee against the bill.

“I won’t allow them to hand over control of our committee to Republicans,” Waxman had told reporters.

Wilson encouraged Blue Dogs on the committee to “gut” the bill. “The Blue Dogs have raised several legitimate concerns against the House legislation ranging from the cost to the disastrous impact upon small businesses,” said Wilson, “and the only way the American people will know that they’ve been properly addressed is if they are aired out in public hearings.”

Wilson called on Americans nationwide to visit with their representatives over the August recess. “The American people owe the Blue Dog coalition a debt of gratitude for giving them a valuable opportunity to meet with their representatives before a vote on this abomination. Now they must meet with their representatives every day and voice their opposition to this plan loudly.”

ALG Backs Fleming Resolution Calling for End to Congressional Exemption from “ObamaCare”

July 28th, 2009, Fairfax, VA—Americans for Limited Government president, Bill Wilson, today again called upon members of the House of Representatives to adopt a resolution (H. Res. 615) and “forgo their right to participate in the Federal Employees Health Benefits Program and agree to enroll under the same public option that they are forcing upon everyone else.”

“Congress has a long history of carving out special deals for themselves—laws that are passed, rules and regulations that are applied to American citizens that Congress has a waiver for and doesn’t have to deal with,” said the bill’s sponsor, Congressman John Fleming, in a recent interview with the Washington News Observer broadcast news service.

According to ALG’s Wilson, “This is a perfect opportunity for members of the House to show that they are willing to participate in the same labyrinthine regulations that they expect the American people to suffer under with the proposed ObamaCare abomination,” said Wilson.

“We are watching the cosponsors list very closely,” Wilson added.

The resolution currently has 61 cosponsors. According to Fleming, “There has not been a single Democrat to sign on. And we have reached out to them. We have reached out to Henry Waxman and to Speaker Nancy Pelosi. I’ve not had any takers.”

Wilson said members “are just applying the same-old Washington mantra, ‘do as I say, not as I do.”

Currently, members of the House and Senate are covered by a health care plan offering a wide variety of options, including private coverage, according to the Federal Employee Health Benefits Plan website, “Federal employees, retirees and their survivors enjoy the widest selection of health plans in the country.”

As participants, members of Congress can choose from “Consumer-Driven and High Deductible plans that offer catastrophic risk protection with higher deductibles, health savings/reimbursable accounts and lower premiums, or Fee-for-Service (FFS) plans, and their Preferred Provider Organizations (PPO), or Health Maintenance Organizations (HMO) if you live (or sometimes if you work) within the area serviced by the plan.”

Wilson also called upon the House Energy and Commerce committee, which is still considering the legislation, to adopt a binding measure that would require all members of Congress to enroll in the government-run health insurance option if lawmakers adopt one.

“It’s time for Congress to get a taste of its own medicine,” said Wilson. “If Congress is so unwilling to sign up for the so-called public ‘option,’ then why should the American people be willing to support it at all?”

ALG Condemns Pelosi-Waxman Plan to Bypass Energy and Commerce Committee

July 24th, 2009, Fairfax, VA—Americans for Limited Government President Bill Wilson today condemned House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Energy and Commerce committee chairman Henry Waxman for “agreeing to bypass the Energy and Commerce committee if members of their own caucus do not cave into dictatorial demands to bring the socialized medicine bill to the floor.”

According to Reuters, Waxman said “we are going to have to look at perhaps bypassing the committee” if no agreement could be reached with at least seven Blue Dog Democrats on the committee that have held up the legislation because of its high price tag, which will cost more than $1.5 trillion according to Kaiser Health News.

Those seven House Democrats signed a Blue Dog Democrat coalition letter against proposed government-run socialized medicine legislation that stated, “We do not support health care reform that is not deficit neutral.”

“Nancy Pelosi has gone completely insane,” said Wilson. “Democrats in the House should be concerned that the Botox has seeped completely into her brain. Like her forehead, the brain has stopped moving.”

Wilson said that circumventing normal procedure will cost her critical votes on the floor of the House. “Nancy Pelosi and Henry Waxman are cramming a bill through that virtually no one has seen nor read, all the while ignoring the legitimate concerns of a key segment of their caucus.”

“And to what end? To ram ObamaCare down the throats of the American people by the arbitrary August deadline. Even if Pelosi and Waxman bypass Energy and Commerce, get it to the floor for next week and get it passed by week’s end just to claim victory, it will be nothing more than a Pyrrhic victory,” Wilson declared.

Currently, there are 52 members of the Blue Dog Democrats in the House of Representatives, more than enough votes to defeat the proposal should they vote with the 178 member House Republican caucus.

Markup in the Energy and Commerce committee is expected to continue into the weekend. Yesterday, a markup session of the House Energy and Commerce committee was canceled because of opposition to the legislation by Blue Dog Democrats on the committee. And the committee also canceled a markup session on Tuesday for the same reason.

The committee had been expected to consider the proposal by the Obama Administration that, according to Politico, would “empower an outside body, like the Medicare Payment Advisory Commission, to make binding recommendation for cost cuts in government-run health care programs.”

House Democrats have claimed that their proposal will cut the growth of Medicare spending by $500 billion over ten years. At Wednesday night’s news conference, Barack Obama elaborated on his plans to cut Medicare to pay for his overall plan by allowing an “independent group of doctors and medical experts” to determine how to cut the program tens of millions of seniors now depend on for medical care.

“This is the greatest demonstration of Nancy Pelosi’s weakness,” said Wilson. “This ObamaCare proposal is so bad that the Speaker of the House cannot even muster enough votes in her own party to bring the bill to the floor. And so in a hissy-fit she is simply circumventing the committee process altogether.”

“The Democrat House Leadership has lost its mind, plain and simple,” Wilson stated.

“Nancy Pelosi and Henry Waxman are telling the Blue Dogs that their legitimate concerns to slow things down and fully consider the astronomical costs of insuring ‘all Americans’ with government-run health care don’t matter. Why should they vote for the proposal now?” Wilson asked in conclusion.

ALG Urges 7 Blue Dogs on Energy and Commerce To Reject Medicare “Rationing Board”

July 23rd, 2009, Fairfax, VA—Americans for Limited Government President Bill Wilson today called upon seven House Democrats that signed a Blue Dog Democrat coalition letter against proposed government-run socialized medicine legislation to “stand up for seniors and Baby Boomers whose health coverage will be put at risk under the cruel Obama plan to cut Medicare to pay for his welfare program.”

“What every single member of Congress needs to do is go home to their districts and tell those 65 years old and older, and those who soon will be, that the plan is take their health care away to pay for somebody else’s,” said Wilson. “And that’s especially so for those Blue Dogs on Energy and Commerce who are being told by Nancy Pelosi and Henry Waxman to vote for the Medicare rationing board.”

Today, a markup session of the House Energy and Commerce committee was again canceled because of opposition to the legislation by Blue Dog Democrats on the committee. The committee also canceled a markup session on Tuesday for the same reason.

“Henry Waxman doesn’t have the votes yet on the committee,” Wilson explained.

The committee is expected to meet again tomorrow to consider the proposal by the Obama Administration that, according to Politico, will “empower an outside body, like the Medicare Payment Advisory Commission, to make binding recommendation for cost cuts in government-run health care programs.”

Wilson said it is “not surprising” that according to James Carville’s Democracy Corps polls, a full 54 percent of seniors now oppose the Obama nationalized health care plan. According to the poll conducted last month, 41 percent of seniors strongly oppose the Obama plan and only 14 percent strongly favor it.

“Senior citizens and Baby Boomers have figured out for themselves what the Obama plan is really all about—the government-imposed rationing of health care,” said Wilson. “And they know what that means for those who are no longer considered ‘productive citizens.”

“As government health care under the Obama plan becomes more and more expensive and less and less available, are seniors going to be consigned to ‘Soylent Green Rationing Rooms’ where government technocrats insert the euthanasia needles?” Wilson asked.

“Seniors have some serious questions—and someone needs to answer them now,” Wilson said.

On Tuesday, Barack Obama lobbied lawmakers on the Energy and Commerce committee to support what Wilson termed a “sick and twisted rationing board to help government reduce life expectancy to reduce medical costs paid on behalf of the elderly.”

“The seven Blue Dogs on the House Energy and Commerce committee need not only be concerned about the unsustainable entitlement they will be creating with the so-called public ‘option’ but that they risk alienating Baby Boomers and senior citizens in their home districts,” said Wilson.

According to The Hill, Congressman Ross, the Chairman of the Blue Dog Health Care Task Force, claims to have 10 House members on Energy and Commerce committee that can block the bill.

“Last time I checked, it took seven Democrats to stop a bill in Energy and Commerce,” Ross said.

Wilson believes that the pressure on the House Blue Dog Democrats will be overwhelming. “Telling seniors that their care is going to be cut to pay for a foolish, unsustainable welfare program is an outright insult to the generation that defended this nation, brought about the fall of communism, and built America,” Wilson concluded.

ALG Applauds DeMint Hold on “Errant, Arrogant threat to freedom” Arturo Valenzuela

Americans for Limited Government (ALG) today commended Sen. Jim DeMint for putting a hold on the nomination of Arturo Valenzuela to be “Western Hemisphere Czar,” terming the nominee, “a dangerous threat to democracy throughout Latin America.”

Valenzuela, nominated by Barack Obama to the post of Assistant Secretary of State for Western Hemisphere Affairs, would exercise broad powers over U.S. policy throughout Latin America and the Caribbean Basin. In the recent past, Valenzuela has argued for “dialogue and opening” towards Cuba, defended Hugo Chavez’ crackdown on press freedom in Venezuela, and denied that violence was a major issue in Mexico.

Most recently, Valenzuela vigorously defended impeached president Manuel Zelaya of Honduras after the strong-arm ruler was impeached for violating the nation’s Constitution. Under tough questioning by DeMint In hearings on the Honduras crisis, Valenzuela claimed that his 40 years as a college professor had made him an expert on “military takeovers.” [SEE ATTACHED Washington News Observer VIDEO]. DeMint reminded the nominee that the Honduran military was acting under orders of the legislature and courts and at no time assumed power.

“Arturo Valenzuela has never met a Marxist dictator that he didn’t embrace,” said ALG’s Wilson. The very thought that he would be in a position to push his despotic agenda throughout Latin America is an anathema to all who value freedom.

“In fact, it seems that the only governments Mr. Valenzuela has problems with are those that adopt democratic constitutions and then embrace and defend the freedoms they assure,” Wilson said. “As long as Manuel Zelaya was violating Honduras’ democratic safeguards, Arturo Valenzuela was nodding in silent consent. But, the moment the courageous people of that country rose up to defend freedom, Valenzuela was suddenly outraged. That’s appalling.”

The controversial Valenzuela first came to national attention in November, 2008, when widely respected journalist Martin Edwin Andersen resigned from Freedom House to protest the nominee’s being an “apologist” for corruption in Argentina and throughout Latin America. Valenzuela at the time was a Freedom House advisor.

“When it comes to Latin America,” Andersen wrote, “I truly hope the Obama team will give a pass on including former Hillary Clinton supporter Arturo Valenzuela on its foreign policy team. Not only is Valenzuela’s dandyish personal style both boorish and pedantic; he has been proven dead wrong on several issues critical to democracy in Latin America and to U.S. security.”

Said Wilson of the Valenzuela nomination, “Barack Obama has appointed scores of ‘czars’ with extra-legal powers to work outside of the normal channels of government to enforce his will. But, the nomination of Valenzuela is one of the most chilling of all.

“He, and he alone, will have nearly dictatorial powers to determine U.S. policy towards Latin America. And his open support for Marxist tyranny – whether in Cuba, Venezuela, or Honduras – proves him to be a clear and present threat to freedom. Jim DeMint is to be commended for standing against this arrogant and errant Ivory Tower elitist.”

ALG News Alert: Congressman Parker Griffith (D-AL) Opposes “ObamaCare”

July 21st, Fairfax, VA—Americans for Limited Government just received a breaking update on the developing Blue Dog rebellion against ObamaCare, and we wanted to immediately bring it to your attention

Congressman Parker Griffith (AL-CD5) is the first House Democrat to completely break with his leadership and with Barack Obama, and stand with the American people against the so-called public “option.”

In a letter Griffith sent to a constituent (below), he writes, “I do not favor a government-sponsored health care option. I believe that a public option would result in less consumer choice and too much government involvement in health care.”

Says ALG President Bill Wilson, “Congressman Griffith deserves the support of all Alabamans in his district, and of all Americans across the nation for opposing the monstrosity now being considered that will eliminate private health options and saddle American taxpayers with an unsustainable entitlement for decades to come.”

As developments continue to come in on the critical “ObamaCare” story, ALG News will keep you posted with timely updates.

Dear __________:

Thank you for taking the time to contact me with your concerns. As your representative, I value maintaining an open dialogue with my constituents, especially on issues as important as health care.

As you know, the question of how to improve our health care system has divided lawmakers on both sides of the aisle. As a physician who spent 30 years treating patients from across North Alabama, I have a different perspective on this issue than others in Congress. I am concerned that the current health care legislation falls short of meeting its goals of reducing costs, increasing access, and protecting a patient’s right to choose. Because this piece of legislation would have such a large and lasting impact on our nation, I want to make my position on this issue clear.

Our first priority is to make sure that we do nothing to harm our current system. We have the best health care system in the world, but we must reduce costs and increase access to the system. To meet these challenges, we must encourage greater competition in the health care market. One of the best ways to do this is by allowing individuals to purchase health insurance across state lines and by requiring providers to cover pre-existing conditions. While I believe it is necessary to increase competition in the health care market, I do not favor a government-sponsored health care option. I believe that a public option would result in less consumer choice and too much government involvement in health care.

Along with increasing competition in the health care market, any effective and sustainable reform must also be carried out in a fiscally responsible manner. As a fiscally conservative member of the Blue Dog Coalition, I am committed to supporting reform that takes into account our growing deficit. Expanding access to health care is vital, but we must not do so at the expense of our children’s and grandchildren’s futures.

One of my main priorities during the health care debate is to encourage Congress to take a thoughtful and bipartisan approach to reform. Wide-sweeping reform cannot be passed overnight. All our options must be carefully considered before finally settling on a package that is in our nation’s best interest. To encourage this type of approach, I recently introduced legislation, H. Res. 643, which requires any major reform bill to be available to the public and Members of Congress at least a week prior to the final vote on the bill.

As the debate over health care reform continues, the key for Congress and the American people is to remain focused on health care reform’s primary goal: improving our current system of care while also saving families, small businesses and the government much-needed money. Again, I appreciate your input on this issue. For more information on the health care debate, I encourage you to visit my website at http://griffith.house.gov where you can view daily news updates regarding health care reform as well as read my health care principles and correspondence with other constituents on this issue.

Sincerely,

Parker Griffith
Member of Congress

ALG Urges 7 Blue Dogs on Energy and Commerce To “Hold Ground Against ObamaCare”

July 21st, 2009, Fairfax, VA—Americans for Limited Government President Bill Wilson today called upon seven House Democrats that signed a Blue Dog Democrat coalition letter against proposed government-run health care legislation to “hold their ground to stop the nationalization of the health care system by Barack Obama.”

Today, a markup session of the House Energy and Commerce committee was canceled because of opposition by Blue Dog Democrats on the committee. They are expected to meet with Barack Obama today as he lobbies them to support the legislation.

“The seven Blue Dogs on the House Energy and Commerce committee who promised to vote down any proposal that was not ‘deficit neutral’ now must make good on their promise, and not give into the thuggish threats of Barack Obama,” said Wilson.

“In fact, the proposal is not ‘deficit neutral,’ it does not pay for itself, and as the years go by, tens of millions of Americans will be added to the rolls of the so-called ‘public’ option, further sinking the nation into insurmountable debt,” said Wilson.

Last week, the director of the Congressional Budget Office (CBO), Douglas Elmendorf, delivered devastating testimony that the government-run health care proposal will not include “the fundamental changes that would be necessary to reduce the trajectory of federal health spending by a significant amount.”

“On the contrary,” Elmendorf said, “the legislation significantly expands the federal responsibility for health-care.” Elmendorf testified that the cost curve of government spending on health care is being raised above its current levels instead of cut.

“These Blue Dogs alone can stop this legislation in committee before it is too late,” Wilson said, adding, “They know that the government will be forced to borrow hundreds of billions of dollars in the coming decades to pay for this abomination.”

In the letter sent by 40 members of the Blue Dog coalition in the House of Representatives on July 9th, members demanded that any House proposal on health care be deficit-neutral, protect small businesses, and that the legislation “must be available to all Members and the public for a sufficient amount of time before we are asked to vote for it.”

A list of the 40 House members can be viewed here in full. Those seven members that signed the letter and sit on the Energy and Commerce committee are Congressmen Bart Gordon (TN-CD6), Mike Ross (AR-CD4), Jim Matheson (UT-CD2), Charlie Melancon (LA-CD3), John Barrow (GA-CD12), Baron Hill (IN-CD9), and Zack Space (OH-CD18).

“This is where the rubber meets the road for Blue Dog Democrats, and for any member of Congress that presumes to be a ‘moderate,’” said Wilson, adding, “Anyone who votes to create this gargantuan entitlement, which professes to cover ‘all Americans’ with health care, will never again be taken seriously when it comes to fiscal and entitlement reform.”

According to the group’s website, the Blue Dog Democrats claim to be a “fiscal conservative” coalition in the House of Representatives, dedicated to “balancing the budget and ridding taxpayers of the burden the national debt places on them.”

According to The Hill, Congressman Ross, the Chairman of the Blue Dog Health Care Task Force, claims to have 10 House members on Energy and Commerce committee that will block the bill if his group’s draft amendments are not accepted.

“Last time I checked, it took seven Democrats to stop a bill in Energy and Commerce,” Ross said.

“The Blue Dogs are the ones making a lot of noise against this radical, government-run health care proposal, but they need to go further,” Wilson said. “This is not about passing cosmetic amendments. This is about stopping the socialization of one-sixth of the American economy and the creation of an unsustainable entitlement.”

“The Blue Dogs have set the standards by which they will be judged: Any member of the Blue Dog coalition that signed this letter and then votes for this monstrosity will be digging their own political grave,” Wilson concluded.

ALG Calls Upon House to Adopt Fleming Resolution Calling for End to Congressional Exemption from Obama Health Care

July 16th, 2009, Fairfax, VA—Americans for Limited Government president, Bill Wilson, today called upon members of the House of Representatives to adopt a resolution (H. Res. 615) stating that “Members who vote in favor of the establishment of a public, Federal Government run health insurance option are urged to forgo their right to participate in the Federal Employees Health Benefits Program (FEHBP) and agree to enroll under that public option.”

The measure is sponsored by Congressman John Fleming and currently has 42 cosponsors. On his website, Fleming writes, “Under the current draft of the Democrat healthcare legislation, members of Congress are curiously exempt from the government-run health care option, keeping their existing health plans and services on Capitol Hill. If Members of Congress believe so strongly that government-run health care is the best solution for hard working American families, I think it only fitting that Americans see them lead the way.”

“What’s good for the goose is good for the gander,” said ALG’s Wilson. “If members of the House are expecting everyone to be a part of this government-run system, then they should be taken off the Federal Employee Health Benefits Plan and put on to this so-called public ‘option’ since they like it so much.”

“It’s time for Washington to stop acting like an aristocracy, where Congress treats itself to luxuries and forces everybody else into convoluted, inefficient, and low-quality so-called ‘options,’” said Wilson.

“Members of Congress know that the system they are proposing will be much, much worse than the health options they currently have,” Wilson added. “What they need to acknowledge is that it will also be much, much worse than the options the American people currently have.”

Wilson also called upon the House Committees on Education and Labor, Ways and Means, and Energy and Commerce to adopt a binding measure that would require all members of Congress to enroll in the government-run health insurance option if lawmakers adopt one.

A similar provision, proposed by Senator Tom Coburn (R-OK), has already been adopted in the Senate version of the bill. In order for it to be included in the House version, the “three-in-one” committee currently considering the legislation needs to add it in.

The Coburn amendment passed by a vote of 12-11 in committee with Senators Chris Dodd (D-Conn) and Ted Kennedy (D-Mass) voting with Senators John McCain (R-Ariz), Orrin G Hatch (R-Utah), Richard Burr (R-NC), Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn), Tom Coburn (R-Okla), Pat Roberts (R-Kan), Judd Gregg (R-NH), Johnny Isakson (R-Ga), and Mike Enzi (R-Wyo) in favor.

In committee, Senator Coburn said, “Let’s demonstrate leadership—and confidence in the system—by requiring that every member of Congress go into it.” 11 Democratic members voted no, including Senator Jeff Bingaman (D-N.M.), who said, “I don’t know why we should require ourselves to participate in a plan that no one else needs to participate in.”

“Senator Bingaman is still sticking to the big lie that the public ‘option’ will at all be optional,” said Wilson.

“The unfortunate impact of this government-run health care proposal will be to crowd out private options, leaving Americans in the end with no other option but to use the Orwellian, abominable, government-run plan that will burden taxpayers with an insurmountable level of debt. This will be the largest government entitlement in human history, and it will break the public treasury,” Wilson concluded.

ALG Calls Upon Blue Dogs to “Stand Firm” Against Government-Run Health Care

July 14th, 2009, Fairfax, VA—Americans for Limited Government President Bill Wilson today praised 40 members of the House Blue Dog Democrats caucus for issuing a letter against proposed legislation that according to Wilson would “institute the single largest expansion of government into health care ever.”

According to the group’s website, the Blue Dog Democrats claim to be a “fiscal conservative” coalition in the House of Representatives, dedicated to “balancing the budget and ridding taxpayers of the burden the national debt places on them.”

“There may be hope for the Blue Dog Democrats yet, but they have to prove that they’re not just drawing straws to see who gets to vote against controversial proposals to provide cover for themselves on bills they already know are going to pass,” said Wilson.

According to The Hill, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said the House bill will be unveiled today, “but added it will still need to be changed to win over skeptical voters in her own caucus. Committee action on the bill could kick off before week’s end, which would set up a vote by July 31 as promised.”

“So far, from ‘stimulus’ to cap-and-tax, Nancy Pelosi has not lost a single important vote all year. And the reason is because so-called ‘conservative’ Democrats always seem to come up just short of the votes needed to block the House Majority’s unabated spend-a-thon,” Wilson explained.  “And that could be because of a backroom deal between the Blue Dogs and the top dog.”

“The only way Blue Dogs will ever be able to prove they are actually in favor of fiscal sanity is to vote against the trillion dollar government-run health care plan now proposed.  It is not, nor will it ever be ‘deficit-neutral,’ and they know it,” Wilson added.

On Thursday Congressman Mike Ross (AR-CD4), chairman of the Blue Dog Health Care Task Force, stated that if the House Majority brings their bill to the floor as proposed, an “overwhelming majority” of his 52 member coalition would vote against it.

“We need to slow down and do it right,” Ross added.

In a letter sent by 40 members of the Blue Dog coalition in the House of Representatives, members demanded that any House proposal on health care be deficit-neutral, protect small businesses, and that the legislation “must be available to all Members and the public for a sufficient amount of time before we are asked to vote for it.”

The letter also required that “sufficient time” would be needed for “any amendments or changes to the bill” stating that “We need time to review it and discuss it with our constituents.  Too short of a review period is unacceptable and only undermines Congress’ ability to pass responsible health care reform that works for all Americans.”

“The Blue Dog Democrats realize that there is blood in the water.  They are hearing from constituents angry over the $1.8 trillion deficit, the $13 trillion in committed bailouts, the failed, wasteful $787 billion ‘stimulus’, and the costly cap-and-tax.  So, the Dogs know that their political necks are on the line,” said Wilson.

“The American people do not want government-run socialized medicine.  Right now, the Blue Dogs have enough signatories to kill the legislation or, at the very least, slow it down.  And if they value their political survival, that’s exactly what they will do,” Wilson concluded.
