July 1, 2025, Fairfax, Va.—Americans for Limited Government Executive Director Robert Romano issued the following statement urging the Senate to finish its work on the One Big Beautiful Bill Act and if necessary to remove the debt ceiling increase:
“Senate Republicans are down to the wire on passage of the One Big Beautiful Bill Act with it being unclear if there are the votes for passage. One item that has made it particularly difficult for certain members normally friendly to tax cuts and welfare reform to vote in favor of the bill is the tied-in $5 trillion increase in the debt ceiling. Normally negotiated under regular order between both parties, the inclusion of the debt ceiling could potentially be preventing Senate Republicans from getting to at least 50 votes. If so, and if otherwise excluding it wouldn’t lose any votes or risk House passage downstream, Republicans might be better off removing the provision. It becomes non-essential.
“While removing the debt ceiling would mean that Senate and House Republicans would have to make a separate agreement or short-term agreements with Democrats as the U.S. Treasury exhausts its extraordinary measures to keep refinancing debt up to the limit, that would still be better than taxes increasing on 80 percent of Americans at the end of the year and failing to secure the border and address the illegal alien crisis. Whatever it takes to secure Senate and then House passage should be on the table including pushing off the debt ceiling. It’s nice to get it done right now because then a separate deal or deals wouldn’t need to be made but also not necessary. The only numbers that matter at this point are 50 and 217. If Republicans fail to deliver their legislative agenda, they will disenfranchise the 77 million Americans who voted for President Donald Trump and House and Senate Republican majorities to extend and expand the 2017 Trump tax cuts, including no income taxes on tips and overtime and cutting taxes for seniors collecting Social Security, finishing the border wall and boosting immigration enforcement. Now is the time to listen to every member and complete the important work they started, whatever it takes.”
