May 7, 2019, Fairfax, Va.—Americans for Limited Government President Rick Manning today issued the following statement in response to President Donald Trump’s consideration of increasing tariffs to 25 percent on $200 billion of Chinese goods:
“China’s recalcitrance in meeting basic intellectual property protections along with their ongoing abuse of currency manipulation has always made trade talks with Beijing a major challenge. The President is 100 percent correct to keep his word in hiking tariffs on Chinese goods after providing a time extension that was more than ample. While short-term these increased tariffs may create difficulties on both sides of the Pacific, America cannot allow the status quo trade relationship with China to remain intact.
“It is now more important than ever before that Speaker Pelosi pass the USMCA to set the stage for other agreements around the world and ensure a stable trading environment that ends the depletion of U.S. wealth that has been accepted since the postwar era.
“Finally, it is no coincidence that North Korea acted in their normal China proxy state role conducted a missile test as a Chinese warning shot for the Trump administration. It is time for China to stop seeking to dominate the world and instead to join the civilized world that has bought its products and elevated its population to a standard of wealth that could not have been imagined 20 years ago.”
